Hawks finish 2nd at states

The defending state champion Bishop Hendricken golf team has a solid performance at the state meet last week at Cranston Country Club, but fell short with a second-place finish as Moses Brown took home the 2018 title.

Although the Hawks had a solid performance in the two-day event, Hendricken coach Rick Angeli felt that his team was just not consistent enough to capture its second-straight title.

“We continued to have some inconsistencies. Not at 1 or 2 with Colin (Sutyla) and Ricky (Angeli) but we had some inconsistency from 3-6,” said Angeli. “We were as prepared as we could be but there were some teams that were as capable as we were. Our original goal was to make the cut and get into day 2. Certainly Colin’s 68 on day 1 was a big part of that. Ricky coming in with a 75 on day 1 was something that we absolutely needed. We also got a big performance from our No. 5 in Jared Lind who got an 81. We don’t always rely on our No. 5 and No. 6 but it’s great when we get it.”

The Hawks got off to a slow start on the second day but would rebound midway through to pull themselves back within striking distance.

“We had a few things going in day 2. Everyone kind of struggled early a little bit, but even with that the performance of the day was from the No. 6 spot. With Justin Richard playing the 6-hole without a lot of experience under his belt, playing pretty much his first year of competitive golf, he shot a 77 in the 6-hole. It became a three-team dog fight between us, Wheeler and Moses Brown,” said Angeli.

Despite coming up just short at Cranston, Angeli was proud of his team’s effort and feels that the younger players will continue to grow as the Hawks flip the page to next season.

“I think performance-wise where we finished, in second place, was a great achievement for us. We had a team that in my opinion, although solid in the top two spots kind of lacked depth. However, we have a freshman at 2, a junior at 3, a junior at 5, and a sophomore at 6. That bodes well for us next year. I thought overall it was a great performance, a great end to a great season,” said Angeli. “They’ll take this experience from this year, learn from it and take some things to make them better going into next year for sure. We’ll see, (Ricky, Jared, and Justin) really set us up for some good depth next year.”

Sutyla led the Hawks on both days, scoring a 68 on day 1 and a 74 on day 2. Ricky Angeli placed on both days, finishing with scores of 75 and 82. Ben DeFelice also made the cut both days with scores of 86 and 81 while Lind scored an 81 on day 2.
