Hawks fall to Rams

The Bishop Hendricken hockey team had a busy weekend, losing to rival La Salle 5-1 on Friday then bouncing back to shut out Barrington 8-0 on Saturday.

Hendricken jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 55 seconds into play when Ryan Mitchell put away a score. That would be the last goal the Hawks would get, as La Salle scored five unanswered to earn the victory.

“I was happy for the most part with our performance. We lost some 1-on-1, individual battles that led to a 5-1 game. They scored two power-play goals, their power play unit has been the best in the league for several years. We worked hard, we had a few mental, lack of detail errors but 5 on 5 we were right there with them,” said Hendricken coach Mike Soscia of the loss.

Soscia credited the Rams’ upperclassmen, who helped set the tone early in the game despite falling behind in the opening minute.

“A lot of the time it came down to will versus skill, and you have to give credit to La Salle, they worked their tails off,” said Soscia. “They have a lot of kids that you hate playing against, but would love to have on your team. You can’t take anything away from them, they’re a very strong, senior-led team.”

The Hawks hit the road to take on Barrington the following day and turned in their best performance of the season.

Harrison Giuliano and Owen Leahy each scored a pair of goals in the win, while Cam Adamec, Mitchell, Chris Cambio and Aidan Paiden each scored one apiece.

“We moved on to Saturday’s game and the boys responded very well. We called up a boy from the JV team and it was a good response. Every game (you hit) the reset button, you have to take one game at a time,” said Soscia, who was glad to see his team put the loss behind it quick. “You can’t worry about the past, you can only focus on the present. I try to break it down by shift for the kids and I tell them, ‘I need you to pay attention to detail for 45 seconds.’ They did that. Were the mad about the loss? Absolutely. But they responded, paid attention to the details and it worked out.”

The Hawks traveled north to take on Reading, MA on Monday evening, but the results were not available at press time.

Hendricken is currently 3-2 in league play, and Soscia hopes to see the young club continue to grow.

“It’s going to be a process, we’re a very young team, we lost 16 players from last year. We are a young team with a lot of drive, so we have a lot of upside,” said Soscia. “It’s going to be about working hard and buying into the team concept. We have a lot more upside than most people think.”
