Hawks, Rams battle to draw

Despite erasing multiple deficits, including a 3-goal disadvantage, the Bishop Hendricken hockey team would settle for a tie against rival La Salle at the Thayer Arena last Friday.

After a scoreless first period, the Rams would surge early in the second and rack up three goals from Brayden Edwards, Austin Tasca and James McCue-Louvet in a five-minute span.

However, the Hawks would earn three unanswered goals of their own to knot the score at 3-3. Cam Toussaint scored a late power-play goal in the second period, followed by a 5-on-3 goal from Jack Dean on the same power-play. Jax Zaroogian would score 3:36 into the third period to even things at 3-3.

McCue-Louvet netted his second score of the game with 6:13 remaining in the third to push the Rams ahead, 4-3. But Hendricken would get a goal from Harrison Giuliano 10 seconds later to once again even the score which would be sustained for the remainder of regulation and through the extra period.

“We would have loved to have won tonight but I could not be more proud of that effort. We were dead and buried at 3-0 but they kept their composure, they kept at it. Then we went down 4-3 and they bounced back again (10) seconds later. Just a great all-around effort, a proud effort, they took a lot of pride in coming back. It was a great job,” said Hendricken coach Jim Creamer of the result.

The two teams combined for 16 penalties in the contest, with four of the goals coming on power-play opportunities. Creamer had mixed feelings on his team’s special teams performance.

“We got (power-play goals) but that is an area that we need to get better at. Our penalty kill is pretty good but our powerplay needs to get better. Hopefully we will coming down the stretch,” said Creamer.

The Hawks and Rams remain at the top of the standings, with Hendricken leading the season series 1-0-1 after topping the Rams earlier in the season in a 3-2 victory. The two powerhouses could very likely cross paths for a fourth time this year (the Hawks also took home a holiday-tournament win), and Creamer expects another hard-fought battle should it happen.

“We know what to expect against them,” said Creamer. “It’s going to be a hard, physical game. They’re going to battle, we get the same thing from them every time, great effort. It’s a great rivalry, there was a great atmosphere tonight. This is what high school sports are all about, this was awesome.”
