Hawks, Pats, Titans earn wins

The Toll Gate, Pilgrim and Hendricken hockey teams all grabbed wins over the weekend.

The Hawks competed in the Pope Francis Invitational in Springfield, Massachusetts, which featured four powerhouses from their respective states – Hendricken, Delbarton (New Jersey), Fairfield Prep (Connecticut) and host Pope Francis (Massachusetts).

Hendricken was able to hold off Fairfield Prep, 3-2, on Friday behind a big game from its top line.

The two teams traded goals in the first period, with Pat Creamer recording the Hawks’ lone tally in the opening 15 minutes.

The score was knotted at 1 heading into the second period, but Hendricken’s top offensive unit would create a little separation on the scoreboard in the middle frame.

At 7:41 of the second period, Andrew Hopgood found the back of the net on assists from Creamer and Michael DiMascolo.

And, less than three minutes later, Creamer buried his second goal of the game on the power play. Hopgood and DiMascolo earned assists on the eventual game-winning goal.

Fairfield Prep scored the lone goal in the third period, but the Hawks were able to hold off the opposition to earn the win and a spot in Saturday’s title game against Delbarton.

The Green Wave (20-1-2) would be too much for the Hawks in the championship, however, as the New Jersey power came away with a 3-1 victory.

For their impressive play, Creamer and Hopgood earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.

Hendricken will return to in-state action on Wednesday at URI’s Brad Boss Arena at 7 p.m. against Prout. The Hawks will then take on Burrillville at Levy Arena at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.

Titans blank Oakers

Toll Gate also took to the ice for a crucial league victory in Division II on Saturday night.

The Titans shut out Coventry, 3-0, behind an outstanding effort from sophomore netminder Austin Sequeira.

Toll Gate got goals from Collin Csoszor and Max Fields, and D.J. Kowalik added an empty-net tally late to ice the victory.

The win pushed Toll Gate’s record to 9-3-1-1, putting it just once point behind Coventry and two points behind first-place Ponaganset in Division II-North.

The Oakers promoted Saturday’s tilt as a Hockey Fights Cancer Game, and they were able to raise over $600 for a great cause, as both schools produced tremendous turnouts.

Toll Gate will play two games at Boss Arena this weekend – Friday at 6 p.m. against South Kingstown and Saturday at 7 p.m. against Portsmouth.

Pats crush Mariners

Pilgrim (11-2) routed one-win Narragansett/Chariho Saturday evening, 10-0, at Cranston Ice Rink.

The Pats exploded on offense and Narragansett couldn’t solve Pilgrim netminder Kyle DiMascio, who earned his second shutout of the season.

Ty Morgan, Jack Clements and Collin Driscoll potted two goals apiece, while Michael Sollenberger, Pat Reilly, Ronald Minear and Matthew Pacheco each netted one.

The Pats will be home at Thayer Arena on Friday and Saturday this week. They’ll take on West Warwick/Exeter West Greenwich Co-op at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Scituate/Woonsocket Co-op at 7:45 p.m. on Saturday.
