Seniors set to lead Pats

The Pilgrim golf team teed off its season recently, and is looking forward to hitting the links this 2019 spring season.

The Patriots return a group that includes six seniors in total, as well as a solid mix of underclassmen as well. Staying consistent and working on the little things will be the focus this season for Pilgrim.

“I have four seniors that play in matches, they like to play, they are very dedicated at practice, they’re improving on a daily basis. Sophomore Joshua Speel is our top guy, he got the final spot in the individual state tournament last year and he shoots in the mid-40s. Right now, our focus is improving our short game every day. Working on the putting greens and keeping the ball on the fairway will be our focus,” said Pilgrim coach Owen Paquet.

The Patriots will be relying heavily on their senior leadership this year, and Paquet is confident that the core will make a splash in their final year in the program.

“They know that golf is a lifelong sport and that they can play for years to come. They’re all great kids, really fun-loving kids. Our captains are Emma Williams, Mike Bartholomew, Will Tatewosian, they’re true leaders, they keep things serious but fun. It’s going to be a great year,” said Paquet.

Although Paquet is looking forward to having one last ride with this senior class, he admits that he will also miss the group after graduation, especially considering the impact that they have made on the program both on and off the course.

“The connective gel, the nucleus that they have, they come to practice, they hang out together off the course. They are truly a special group of seniors that are closing out their careers at Pilgrim. The impact that they’ve made on the team and myself … it really has made me enjoy coaching even more,” said Paquet. “There are times when kids are too good for the team, but this group has really grounded me and has taught me what coaching is all about, which is to get these kids better at golf. They have really helped bring kids out to the game to enjoy the same experiences that they have had.”
