Hawks look to finish strong

The Bishop Hendricken volleyball team has jumped out to a solid start this season, posting an 8-4 record through its first 12 matches.

Although the Hawks are well on their way to clinching a playoff spot, they still feel like there is plenty of room for improvement, and hope to solidify their place as one of the elite groups this spring.

“We are right where we need to be. We are competing against some of these top teams and we hope to be playing our best volleyball at the end of the season. We are right where we wanted to be going into the year,” said Hendricken coach Mike Harrington.

The Hawks have been going toe to toe with some of the top teams in Division I, taking home big wins against clubs like North Kingstown and Cranston East. However, they have also dropped tough matches against the first-place Coventry Oakers, as well as La Salle.

At the moment, the Hawks are more focused on the big picture, and improving each day while not getting caught up in the wins and losses.

“We are trying to build some toughness and grit knowing that we are playing against really talented teams. I am not very concerned about the wins, losses or outcomes at this point in the season. We are just trying to improve physically, mentally, and we can’t be stressed about the scoreboard,” said Harrington, who likes the versatility of his group. “We have a good, balanced team. We do everything well. We pass-serve, we have gotten offense from a handful of people this year. We just need to raise our play to the level of these other top teams. Mental toughness, it’s something that we’re really trying to instill in their minds.”

The Hawks will be tested down the stretch of the regular season, as they are slated to go up against Coventry, La Salle and Cranston East once again. The Hawks faced Chariho on Wednesday evening, but the results were not available at press time.

After falling in the state championship game last year, the Hawks are looking to finish strong, play their best when it counts, and to hopefully avenge that loss next month.

“Every season is new and fresh, but there are some kids that were on the floor in the championship last year that are here this year and know that feeling,” said Harrington. “They are highly motivated to see if they can get back there and win it this year.”
