Michael Del Sesto
Valedictorian Michael Del Sesto, 18, will attend Dartmouth College this fall. “I plan to enroll with a biomedical engineering major to get experience in both the medical and engineering fields,” said Del Sesto.
Del Sesto participated in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and was a peer mentor for the OPTIONS Program – which assists students with intellectual disabilities. He was a dedicated member of the Visual Arts Academy, Hendricken programming team and math modeling team.
The valedictorian earned several awards throughout his career at Hendricken, including an NIAAA student athlete scholarship and the American Mathematics Society award. He was also academic all-state in cross country and part of the championship team of the University of Rhode Island calculus bowl.
When asked what he will remember most about his high school years, Del Sesto said “the encouragement and guidance of the teachers, coaches, staff, and my peers will stick with me throughout college and life. Learning the importance of service through programs and events such as the OPTIONS program peer mentor, Hawks writing center, Hendricken hunger walk, and Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation 5K has led me to seek similar opportunities in the future. A particular math lesson, in which our teacher, Mr. Thomas Morley, challenged us to define the word ‘red’ taught me the importance of communication along with respecting and understanding different perspectives.”
“The collaborative and respectful environment created by the students of Hendricken has created an unforgettable four years. My parents and family stuck with me and encouraged me all the way. The teachers not only taught curriculum but served as role models and guides,” Del Sesto said about the people who contributed the most to his success.
When asked what motivated him to excel, Del Sesto described the numerous opportunities created by the school that “were both engaging and thought provoking. The school’s unique focus on theology and the arts presents students with new viewpoints and encourages them to challenge their beliefs and outlooks while stressing the importance of respect and acceptance. In the classroom, on the track, in the arts rooms, etc. students encourage each other to succeed.”
Michaelangelo Coppa
Co-salutatorian Michaelangelo Coppa, 18, will be attending Brown University in the upcoming school year. Coppa intends to major in mathematics. Besides a focus on mathematics in high school, Coppa ran cross country, participated in both indoor and outdoor track and field, Hendricken’s jazz ensemble, jazz combo and string orchestra. Coppa was a member of various honor societies in different disciplines, including the National Honor Society. Coppa also earned the Brown University Book Award.
Out of all the memories he’s formed at Hendricken, Coppa says it’s, “the friendships I’ve made and maintained, and the good times I’ve had with my friends,” that he’ll remember the most.
“My parents and my closest friends” contributed the most to my success and enjoyment throughout my high school years, said Coppa. A desire to learn led him on the path to co-salutatorian.

Ryan Brinton, 17, Hendricken co-salutatorian, plans to attend Syracuse University in the fall. At Syracuse, Ryan intends to pursue a degree in environmental science.
Throughout his time at Hendricken, he participated in pep band, hoop band, jazz band, jazz combos, and concert band. In addition to being section leader of Hendricken’s indoor percussion ensemble, Ryan spent his time tutoring students in English and math.
In recognition of his excellence in an array of disciplines, Ryan received the National Merit Letter of Commendation, the John Philips Sousa Music Award, as well as the National French Exam Silver Medal. He was also part of Mu Alpha Theta, the English Honor Society and the French Honor Society.
Brinton thinks the memories that will last his lifetime are “playing snare drum at the football games and [participating in] indoor percussion competitions.” Teachers stand out to Ryan when it comes to whom he attributes his success to. The AP biology teacher Mr. Jeremy Graney, as well as U.S. history teachers Mr. Michael Quigley and Mr. John Manning have had a profound impact on Ryan’s progression. Patrick Faherty
Ranked 4th in his class, Patrick Faherty will be attending Brown University. The 18-year-old wants to major in developmental studies. Faherty was president of the Hawks Helping Hands, the treasurer and secretary for student council, and a peer mentor. Patrick also was a member of the Hendricken Choir, peer ministry, and unified basketball team.
Faherty received the Secretary of State’s civic leadership award and Governor’s leadership award. Faherty said what he will remember most about Hendricken is friends, unified basketball, peer mentoring, and studying hard.
The people and groups that contributed most to Patrick’s success include his parents, teacher Sister Carole Anne Murray, friends, The League and the OPTIONS program. Faherty said he was motivated in high school by his desire to learn and impact the world.
Stephen Marandola Jr.
Stephen Marandola Jr., 18, ranked 5th in his class and plans to attend Tufts University. He looks to major in cognitive and brain sciences. A few of Marandola’s highlights came during his participation in the Academic Decathlon junior year, an internship at Cedar Crest Nursing Center from 10th to 12th grades, from tutoring at Hendricken to time spent with the Youth Ministry at Immaculate Conception Church.
Throughout his high school career, Marandola was a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and was a U.S. Academic Decathlon national individual gold medallist and a member of the second-place team.
“The invaluable friendships that I have made with my lifelong brothers, and the time we shared through it all,” is what he will remember most about Hendricken, said Marandola.
The people who contributed most to his success and enjoyment of high school were his, “Hendricken brothers, teachers, especially Sister Carole Anne Murray, and my parents,” said Marandola. Ascribing to the Hendricken way, Stephen was motivated to excel by being the best person he could be for everyone around him.
rian Schattle
Brian Schattle, 18, ranked 6th in his class will attend Loyola University in Maryland. He aims to major in biology. Brian played baseball, basketball, unified volleyball, and ran cross-country throughout a large portion of his Hendricken career. He was on the math team, worked as a peer mentor for the OPTIONS program at Hendricken, Ambassador’s Club, writing center coach, Special Olympics volunteer, and many others.
Schattle, earning Hendricken’s coveted Man of the Year award in 2019, has many other honors under his belt as well. He was a member of the National English Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor society. Schattle was also earned the College of the Holy Cross Book award as a junior.
When asked what he will remember most about high school, Schattle said “the OPTIONS program and being a peer mentor as it was one of my favorite experiences. Also being a part of the baseball, basketball, and unified volleyball teams.”
“My parents, my little brother Bobby, my whole family, my friends and teammates, and my coaches and teachers” all contributed to my success, said Schattle. Brian praises his parents for “instilling values of hard work” in him since he was a child. He also mentioned the impact friends had on his success. “My closest friends and I all pushed each other through encouragement and healthy competition.”
Ryan Mallozzi
Ryan Mallozzi, 18, who ranked 7th academically in Hendricken’s class of 2019, will attend Boston College for biochemistry. The recent graduate ran varsity cross country as well as varsity indoor and outdoor track.
Mallozzi was 3rd team all-state in cross country, academic all-state, all-class in cross country/indoor, and all-division in indoor track. He was a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society.
Mallozzi will remember and maintain the life-long friendships he’s made at Hendricken. When it comes to shaping the student and person as a whole, Ryan says his parents, teachers, coaches and classmates contributed the most to his success. Instead of a desire to succeed or not to fail, Ryan said his motivation to excel was his desire to expand his field of knowledge.
Michael Ryan
Michael Ryan, 18, who also ranked 7th in his class will attend George Washington University for biomedical engineering. Michael was on the varsity swimming team all four years that they won the state championship, including his senior year when he was co-captain. He also made all-state swimming in 10th, 11th and 12th grade. Academically, Michael was a member of the school’s Academic Decathlon team won the state title and went on to capture second place nationally in its school division. Michael also found time for Hawks Helping Kids, and as a writing center coach.
Ryan was a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He also earned the Georgetown University Alumni book award. Michael said he’ll always cherish the “annual Hendricken vs. La Salle football games, sophomore year “Christmas Assignment,” breaking science equipment during every AP Bio lab, and furthering the dynasty and legacy of Hendricken swimming.”
Michael wanted to send his thanks out to Mr. Graney, Mr. Manning, Mrs. Michelle Mercurio, Coach Dave Hanson, Sister and teacher Carole Anne Murray, his Mother and father for shaping him into a successful young man. “The sense of accomplishment I felt after completing a hard task,” Michael said, was what gave him the motivation to excel, along with his “desire to acquire knowledge.”
Jacob Boblitt
Jacob Boblitt, 18, ranked 9th in the Hendricken class of 2019, will attend New York University in the fall. His intended major is film and television, the reasons for which can be seen in his long resume of activities during his high school career. Jacob participated in many facets of theater during his time at Hendricken, including prop making and being the assistant stage manager. Along with theater, Jacob was in the Media Art Academy, Hendricken’s pep band, and Show Choir Tech.
The recent graduate received numerous awards for his work in the media arts as well as music, including the Director Award, which Boblitt earned in his sophomore and junior years; Excellence in Media Arts; the 2018 new artist play festival award; Director of the Arts Leadership award; Athletic Band Spirit award; Excellence in Directing; Mahlenberg Book award; Excellence in Stage Managing; and Excellence in Screenplay Writing.
As to the memories Jacob will hold on to from his time at Hendricken, he said the small parts of high school everyone moans at and takes for granted are the moments he’ll remember as the best. His successes didn’t come without help and he thanks his parents and good friends from Media Arts. When it came to his accomplishments in academics and extracurricular activities, Jacob attributed his motivation to the unpleasant thought of one day regretting not excelling when he could have.
Joseph Quijioc
Joseph Quijioc, 18, also ranked 9th in his class will attend the University of Rhode Island for mechanical engineering. Quijioc was in concert band, Chess Club and Ambassador’s Club. He was a helper at the Hawk’s writing center in addition to tutoring math.
Quijioc received the U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell Gold Medal; NSE Silver medal; NSE bronze medal; He was a member of the National Honor Society and National English Honor Society
He said he will remember, “The relationships I have formed with classmates and teachers” during his years at Hendricken. He attributes his success to the teachers at Hendricken who “teach and inspire their students to do their best.” Joseph says his desire for personal excellence and his innate curiosity enabled him to get where he is now.
