Holly Weber named Parks and Recreation Coordinator

Holly Weber, a longtime employee of the Senior Services division, has been appointed Parks and Recreation Coordinator, Mayor Scott Avedisian announced at Friday’s mayoral debate.

In a release issued Monday, the administration said Weber was selected as part of a reorganization of the Parks and Recreation Department, and that she will seek to expand the current city programming, as well as expand the city's recreational offerings to youths and adults.

"I am so pleased that Holly has agreed to take on this new challenge within the city," Mayor Avedisian said in a statement. "She has been tireless in her efforts to bring the best programs and services to our seniors and I know she will bring that same trademark enthusiasm to the table when it comes to the Parks and Recreation Department. I have known her for close to 10 years and she has risen to every challenge with professionalism and poise. I have no doubt that she will continue to do the same in this new role."

Weber succeeds Michael Rooney who has served in the post since being appointed days after Lincoln Chafee was sworn in as mayor in 1993. Rooney resigned about a month after the Aug. 14 drowning of Jamir Stewart, 6, at City Park Beach.

In making the announcement, Avedisian also spoke of other new changes within the department. The city, along with the Boys and Girls Club of Warwick, will be joining forces to bring new recreational programs, including a music and technology program, to city students at the Cooper Armory. Additionally, Weber has promised to help with the creation of additional recreational activities for seniors, the development of a new youth swim program, and other youth and senior programs.

The mayor said Weber's appointment promises to bring revitalization to the existing programming and reinforce the good working relationship between the city and many of its recreational partners.

Weber worked for the YMCA as the Director of School-aged Programs for five (2002-2007) years before coming to work for the City of Warwick. Beginning in November 2007, Weber worked for the Recreation Department as Recreation Supervisor until moving to the Senior Services Department in March of 2009. Weber held that position until last week.

She reported for her first day of work Monday.

Weber applied for the job after it was posted on Sept. 29. According to the posting the job has a salary range of $62,000 to $67,000. She reports to chief of staff and Public Works Director David Picozzi.

Congratulations and best wishes for the future to the hard-working Holly! It was a pleasure knowing her from my visits to the Pilgrim Center.
