Rep. Vella-Wilkinson resolution urges Coast Guard funding during shutdown

Posted

The House of Representatives passed a resolution (2019-H 5135) introduced by Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson calling on Congress to pass legislation to fund the United States Coast Guard during the current federal government shutdown.

“The Coast Guard plays such a vital role — particularly here in the Ocean State,” said Representative Vella-Wilkinson, a retired naval officer who serves on Congressman James Langevin’s Military Advisory Board. “Their work in search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, environmental protection and national security is an essential function. If something isn't done soon, these brave members of the Coast Guard will not get paid and they and their families will face difficult times, with many unable to pay their bills or put food on the table.”

Congressman Jeff Van Drew (D-N.J.) submitted the legislation would provide funding during the shutdown. The Rhode Island House resolution calls for its passage and for the President to sign the measure.

The United States Coast Guard currently has 40,912 men and women on 14 active duty, 7,000 reservists, 31,000 auxiliarists, and 8,577 full-time civilian employees for a 15 combined workforce of 87,569. In a typical day for the United States Coast Guard, they will conduct 109 10 search and rescue missions, save ten lives, assist 192 persons in distress, protect $2.8 million 11 dollars in United States property, and seize 169 pounds of marijuana and 306 pounds of cocaine.

"Representative Vella-Wilkinson, a retired naval officer who serves on Congressman James Langevin’s Military Advisory Board."

Perhaps Rep. Valla-Wilkinson should have used her position as Congressman's Military Advisory Board and tell Langevin to put the Country's well being ahead of party politics. Fund the Wall!!!
