They’ve got their eye on a cure. Heather and Jeri Schey of Warwick are identical twins, both born with a retinal degenerative eye disease that is taking away their vision.
Since 2006 The Foundation Fighting Blindness has hosted “VisionWalks” across the country. This year will be the 10th consecutive year for the Boston VisionWalk.
During the walk’s third year, Jeri volunteered at the Boston VisionWalk, handing out T-shirts and helping with refreshments. Though she did not walk then, Jeri told Heather about the walk and the following year they formed a team. The Schey’s team, Blind Faith, has been participating in the walk since then.
“The walk gives us hope,” said Heather.
The walk does not have a location in Rhode Island, but Blind Faith still wants the local community to be a part of the team.
“I want our community to show support for us,” says Jeri. “There’s a Helen Keller quote that we love: “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
To meet their goal of $5,000, Blind Faith will be holding a fundraiser on Sunday, September 16 at St. Mark’s Church Hall on 111 West Shore Rd, Warwick. Tickets to the fundraiser will be sold at the door for $20.
Barstool Sports writer and sports comic Jerry Thornton will be at the fundraiser to talk and have a Q&A to promote his new book about the New England Patriots. Jeri met Thornton when he was doing a book promotion at a Pawtucket Red Sox game. Jeri told him about the fundraiser, and Thornton signed up for the fundraiser on the spot.
“He was such a nice guy right from the get-go,” said Jeri.
The DJ, Bob Arnold, will be donating his time for the event in order to support the cause. Arnold was the Schey’s junior high math teacher. He has a 3-½ year old grandson who was born blind, so the Schey’s fundraiser struck close to the heart.
Donations will be accepted for tickets in a raffle. Prizes include tickets to Janet Jackson at the Dunkin Donuts Center, a gift certificate for two to 1149 restaurant, and a $50 gift certificate to Irving oil.
