Jean (Entwistle) Patefield-Costa

Jean (Entwistle) Patefield-Costa, 91, of Warwick, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2019. She was the wife of the late Dimas “Dan” Costa and the late Thomas J. Patefield Sr.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late James and Irene V. (Jelinek) Entwistle. She lived in Warwick for 48 years, also spending time in Rumford, and was a summer resident of Jamestown and West Yarmouth, Mass. She was a communicant of St. Margaret Church and a member of the Banking Committee. She was a communicant and one of the original founding members of St. Gregory The Great Church in Warwick, serving as the treasurer of the Women’s Club. She was a member and soloist of St. Gregory’s Choir for 36 years and the Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral Choir, The Peloquin Choral, St. Michael’s Church, Providence, and St. Mark’s Church in Jamestown, The Chaminade Music Club, The Cleft Community Chorus of East Greenwich and the West Bay Chorale. She was a former member of the Hamilton House, board member of Music On the Hill and the West Bay Chorale. She was active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America.

She was a graduate of Classical High School and attended Edgewood Junior College and was a graduate of Johnson & Wales Business School. She also studied at the Rhode Island Conservatory of Music. Jean worked for the Warwick School Department for 27 years, serving as executive secretary in Federal Programs and Business Affairs. She was also a mentor in the Warwick Schools Mentoring Program. Throughout her life, she enjoyed playing tennis, golf and duplicate bridge. She was a member of Bridge Works and the American Contract Bridge League.

She leaves two sons, Thomas J. Patefield (Laurel) of Warwick and Scott S. Patefield (Janelle) of West Greenwich, and two daughters, Diane M. Patefield (Richard Lee) of Charlestown and Cheryl P. Dowdell (William) of Charlestown. She was the sister of the late James Entwistle and sister-in-law of the late Stephen V. Patefield, Josephine Entwistle and Florence Johnson. She was “Mimi” to her eight grandchildren, James Patefield (Mackenzie), Kellyn Kalish (Brett), Emily Larochelle (Trevor), Mary Patefield, Brian Dowdell (Emily), Mark Dowdell (Kaitlyn), Michael Dowdell and Gregory Dowdell, and her great-grandchildren Ava, Joel, Thomas, Everett and Madeline. She was the sister-in-law of Richard E. Patefield. She is also survived by several cousins and three stepdaughters, Margaret and Elizabeth Costa of Jamaica Plain, Mass. and Susan Costa of Baltimore, Maryland; two stepsons, Daniel Costa of Somerville, Mass. and Thomas Costa of Rumford, and 11 step-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Church, Warwick. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. Visiting hours are Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 4-7 pm in Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick.
