a registered nurse
Joan Learned passed away peacefully on March 14, 2012 with her daughter, son and friends by her side.
Joan was predeceased by her mother, Dorothy Beckett; brother, Richard Beckett and nephew Jon Conway and is survived by her daughter, Debra Learned; son, Douglas Learned; granddaughter, Emily Meehan; sister Susan Beckett; brother Kenneth Beckett; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Although Joan resided in Maine for most of the past 15 years, she lived the majority of her life in Warwick, graduating from Warwick Veterans Memorial High School in 1957, then was part of the first graduating class from the RI School of Practical Nursing in 1958. From there, Joan went on to New Hampshire School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1962.
For over 40 years Joan was a respected nurse, trainer, case manager, mentor and friend to countless patients and co-workers throughout New England. Joan had a thirst for knowledge and growth and, as a result, received countless professional certifications in addition to RN and certified social worker.
Joan loved sports. When Joan was not on the field playing or coaching, she was enthusiastically supporting area teams. She also loved gardening and cooking. She was happiest when she could combine the two and create incredible meals for friends and family using ingredients from her garden. Joan was a strong, determined, proud woman who always made an impression and touched countless lives, even those of strangers, with her generosity and caring.
For friends and family in Rhode Island, there will be an informal gathering with brunch to honor Joan and share memories March 31 at 11 a.m. at Chelo’s Waterfront, 1 Masthead Dr., Warwick.
