Kent Center uses Rotary grant to purchase automated external defibrillator

Posted

The Kent Center, recipient of a Warwick Rotary Club’s annual Community Project Grant Award, has used the $1,373.50, to purchase an automated external defibrillator, storage cabinet, signage, rescue kit and carry case that has been installed at The Kent Center’s Post Road location in Warwick. The kit also includes pediatric, infant and child-sized pads.

If an individual experiences cardiac arrest due to V-Fib, his or her chances of survival are decreased by approximately 10 percent with each minute that passes.

“While The Kent Center’s staff members are trained in CPR, cardiopulmonary resuscitation alone cannot restore a heart's normal electrical function,” said Daniel Kubas-Meyer, The Kent Center’s president and CEO. “To achieve the greatest chance of recovery, it is imperative that both CPR and defibrillation of the heart is performed within the first few minutes after a cardiac arrest.”

Kubas-Meyer continued, “The Kent Center and the Warwick Rotary Club share a common mission of improving the quality of life of the members of our community, and we are grateful for their support. One day, the defibrillator may be required to save the life of a client or staff member. Having the ability to convert the equipment to use on a child is critical because many of the clients assisted by our Youth and Family Program are under the age of ten.”

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Grant funding is raised through its annual Gourmet Gala, May Breakfast, and car raffle. Event proceeds are used to support local charities, scholarships, and community causes related to health, hunger, poverty, children, the elderly, domestic abuse, education, literacy, disabilities, ecology, and town beautification.
