LA Rams coach Coen talks with Hendricken team

One of the top athletes to come out of Rhode Island returned home last week, as former standout La Salle quarterback Liam Coen visited the Bishop Hendricken football team to talk about football, life and promote his upcoming skills camp.

Coen recently got his big break in his football life, getting hired as the assistant wide receivers coach of the Los Angeles Rams. Prior to that, Coen played quarterback for the University of Massachusetts and eventually became the offensive coordinator at the University of Maine.

Coen was hired by Rams head coach Sean McVay back in February and is excited to be living his dream of being in the NFL.

“It’s one of those things, you always wear the jerseys as a kid, you wear the helmets, you pretend to be this guy, that guy. I always dreamed and hoped to be a football player in the NFL. That unfortunately didn’t happen to me, but this I think is a pretty good B option for me. I didn’t think that this would be a possibility but I’d be lying if I said that this wasn’t my dream,” said Coen, who is still adjusting to the pros after spending time in college. “(The biggest difference is) probably just the professionalism of it all. These guys have so much time to do just football. There is very little time and there is very little error at the level that we’re at because it’s their job, it’s all of our jobs. The professionalism and the speed of the game is a little bit different.”

Although Coen was at his former rival in Hendricken, he was excited to have the chance to speak to the players and give back to his home state.

“I had a couple of interesting games here in my high school career. To be able to talk to these guys here, the program that (Hendricken head coach) Keith (Croft) has going on here is pretty special. It’s unbelievable, it’s something that I always wanted to do,” said Coen. “Coaching in college the last few years, it’s something that I always wanted to do. To come back and be involved in this state and give back to these kids as much as possible.”

Coen’s camp will take place on July 11th at La Salle. The goal is to not only teach the participants the basics of the game, but to give them a platform in front of coaches that span all the way to the college and professional level.

“It’s going to be a skills fundamentals camp. This is not a meat market like I told these guys, this is an opportunity to try to get better and get quality coaching from all three levels … high school, college and pros,” said Coen. “It’s a combination between skills, fundamentals, technique, as well as a recruiting tool for these guys.”

Coen hopes to see some of the state’s top football players at La Salle and has been proud of some of the athletes that have come out of Rhode Island in recent years, including recent Georgia-commit Xavier Truss.

“I’m extremely impressed, it’s only gotten better,” said Coen. “Shoot, in the last 3-4 years there have been 3-4 FBS recruits. That’s big time, that’s insane. I think right now you may have to say it’s at its peak in the past 10-20 years. You’ve got Xavier Truss, that’s a national recruit, we’ve never had that.”
