The Hendricken cross country team impressed among some of the nation’s best teams at the Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, North Carolina over the weekend, finishing fourth as a team.

The Hawks went up against three of the top 15 teams in the country in the Race of Champions, including the top team in the country, Loudon Valley from Virginia. The team’s fourth-place finish was the program’s highest placement at the Great American Cross Country Festival since 2009.

Junior Aidan Tierney led the way for the Hawks, and his effort was followed by standout runs from sophomore Luke Henseler, juniors Jack McMahon and Jonathan Iamarone, senior Sean Meehan and juniors Ryan Mallozzi and Dylan Manning.

Hendricken finished 28 points in front of rival La Salle, which earned fifth place.

Titans battle back from two sets down

The Toll Gate girls’ volleyball team battled back from two sets down to shock the Wizards of West Warwick, 3-2, in a Division II-South matchup on Wednesday evening.

After dropping the first two sets by scores of 15-25 and 22-25, the Titans began to mount their comeback with a 25-22 victory in the third set, and they would go on to win the fourth set, 25-20, to force a winner-take-all fifth set.

Toll Gate would buckle down to edge the Wizards, 17-15, in that fifth set to complete the comeback.

The Titans are now 4-6 in league play, and they’ll look to continue their momentum next Wednesday night at home against Narragansett at 6 p.m.

Hawks earn draw against Patriots

Senior forward Chukwuma Onyejose netted the equalizer with 12 minutes remaining in the second half to earn the Hendricken soccer team a 2-2 tie with Portsmouth on Friday evening.

Hendricken’s Michael Hanlon and Portsmouth’s Liam Callahan scored goals in the first half as the two teams went into halftime tied at 1.

Mike Tavares then gave the Patriots a 2-1 lead in the second half, before Onyejose clinched a point for his squad with his late tally.

Chukwudi Onyejose assisted on both Hendricken goals, and senior goalkeeper Ryan Morel made four stops in goal for the Hawks.

The Hawks are now in first place in Division I with a record of 6-1-1 with 19 points, one point ahead of both South Kingstown and North Kingstown. Hendricken will return to the pitch on Wednesday when it hosts North Kingstown at 6 p.m.
