Looking back on 2019

The year 2019 was both wonderful and bittersweet for me. I ended a marriage. It was what I needed to do for my mental health, but it still brings with it a sense of sadness and failure. Through the process, I learned that I have many great friends that I could count on. Many of them are from my walking group, The Rocky Point Pacers. The group continues to thrive and has over 1,500 members. It’s been over three years since I formed it and we have done lots of fun things besides walking.

My relationship with my daughter got especially good towards the end of 2019. I love this! She is smart, funny and gave me two beautiful granddaughters.

I started writing for this paper this year. That has brought me great joy. It’s fun sharing my life and its trials and tribulations. I hope my thoughts, ideas and tips have helped some people, even if only to brighten their day. I now get emails from my growing audience. One even suggested I run for mayor!

I got involved in local politics this year on a deeper level than before. I’ve learned that government moves very – and I mean very – slowly. I’ve also learned that like anything else there are the good guys and gals and bad guys and gals. There are the ones that keep their promises and the ones that will say anything for your vote.

I’ve also learned that my problems seem small compared to others. Attending City Hall meetings and hearing that we are taxing our elderly and veterans out of their homes gave me a renewed interested in government. I learned that sitting home and complaining does nothing. Honestly, even attending meetings and speaking up doesn’t do a lot. But when I leave a meeting I know that the people that I voted in saw me there and I hope it will encourage them to do the right thing for the citizens of Warwick.

In closing, I wish you all a happy 2020. Slow down, don’t take things too personally and count your blessings.
