Loparto making independent bid for Senate Dist. 29

Posted

If visions win votes, then Ron Loparto from Conimicut will be the next senator for District 29.

Loparto is convinced people are fed up with the “political criminal organization” running the state and he’s the one who can provide representation with dignity and trust. He said in an interview last week that people are “shocked and stunned” when they hear of fraud and witness such strong-arm politics as passage of truck tolls and the retribution dealt Rep. Joseph Solomon Jr. for failing to toe the line and vote for the tolls. Solomon lost a committee seat in the wake of voting against the tolls.

“They can’t vote their heart,” Loparto said of state legislators. “Too many want to keep their jobs.”

He believes incumbent Sen. Michael McCaffrey is one of them.

“He’s building his business,” he said. “McCaffrey has not voted for what his constituency wants. He helped create the truck tolls.”

The strong political control, he claims, has stifled freedom of speech and good ideas. To turn things around, Loparto says, “It’s going to take an independent candidate, not a ‘yes’ man for anybody.” He is running as an independent.

He says he won’t be beholden to anyone.

“I possess the courage and honesty to the taxpayer, the exact kind of politician necessary to stand tall and walk tall against the odds in the Rhode Island legislature,” he writes in a press release.

Among those issues he lists as supporting are term limits, grant accountability, ethics in government, line item veto, small business, quality education, seniors, veterans and public safety. He said he would always vote for the wants and needs of his constituents, “spreading the wealth to all taxpayers and not just special interests, as is done now.”

Retired from a career in real estate and investment, Loparto points to his experience in scouting and the church as being especially formative. He said he had 11 years of “perfect attendance” at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on West Shore Road and he is especially proud of climbing the ranks from a Cub Scout to a Gold Palm Eagle Scout.

Loparto is no newcomer to politics. He calls himself a “Kennedy Democrat,” and at the age of 18 announced as a candidate for the mayor of Pawtucket. His successive effort to win elective office was successful. He was elected to the Lincoln Town Council. He went on to make a bid for a House seat, winning the race by 16 votes when the polls closed, only to lose it by 11 votes when the absentee votes were counted.

Loparto talks about his “beautiful” three daughters, who he says he raised as a stay-at-home father.

Loparto has launched his campaign on Facebook and a website, “Rhode Island Independents’ Day,” that he founded. He said his fiancée, Kim Ward, whose father Robert Ward served as a Warwick state representative and clerk of the city Board of Canvassers, is his campaign manager.

“Following politics is my life blood,” Loparto writes. “Six months ago, I received a ‘vision.’ I saw the national parties falling apart, just like here in Rhode Island. I knew it was time! I felt it in the air and saw it very clearly. I would start a group to change life in Rhode Island, Rhode Island Independents’ Day and I saw myself winning the State Senator 29 seat. History is going to be made in our great state. You are part of it.”
