There will be a little bit of Hogwarts in every part of the Warwick Public Library on Saturday, March 25. A "Hogwarts Open House" will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Library staff encourage Harry Potter fans of all ages to come and mingle with fellow witches and wizards. There will be many different fun activities taking place as part of the open house, including creation of magical potions, a castle-wide scavenger hunt, sending letters by Owl Post, and much more. Guests will even have the opportunity to be sorted into their Hogwarts House. Dressing up is also highly encouraged; Ellen O'Brien, Coordinator of Children’s Services at the library, will be dressed up as Professor Trelawney, Head of the Divination Workshop at Hogwarts School.

"We have never hosted an event to this scale before," said O'Brien, "I only wish we had a bigger parking lot."

As of Wednesday 272 people had registered for the open house. If the event ends up being too much of a success, O’Brien says guests will still be able to enjoy the decorations, scavenger hunt and the costumes of fellow fans.

"We wanted to create an event that would appeal to all ages, people in the community and in the library. There are so many fans, we figured this would be a perfect way to celebrate the fun," O'Brien said.

Excitement surrounding the books hasn't waned since the release of the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, in 1997, said O’Brien. The library has seven or eight copies of each Harry Potter book, and they’re always off the shelves, said Pam Miech, who has worked at the library for more than two decades. While initially geared towards readers in the fourth grade and up, the appeal has become broader, captivating readers of all ages.

Many students are taking advantage of the opportunity to get some volunteer hours at this event, including Ryan Miech of Hendricken. He is creating the portrait gallery in the stairway as part of his senior project. However, everyone is invited to help make this event as magical as possible by contributing a treat to the Great Hall dessert buffet taking over the library's meeting hall. It will include themed desserts such as "snitch pops." Those interested should stop in at the Children's Desk or call 739-5440 #5.

The event will incorporate every Harry Potter book and movie, with handmade decorations, foods, activities and costumes.

"I don't want to give away all of the surprises," said O'Brien.
