Mark Schwager, who stepped into public service almost immediately upon arriving in East Greenwich 24 years ago, has been tapped by the East Greenwich High School Wall of Honor Committee as the recipient of its 2019 Appreciation Award.

The award has been given to an East Greenwich resident(s) for their devotion, loyalty and support, not just to the Wall of Honor but also to the Town of East Greenwich. Past awards have gone to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Bartlett, who do great work at St. Luke's Food pantry; Doug Greene, who does likewise for Our Lady of Mercy Outreach; Mrs. Beth Cauley, principal at Hanaford for the many good programs she runs; Bob Houghtaling of Youth to Youth and many other town programs; Sue Cienki and Tom Joyce among others of the giving people in the town who have been honored. Now Mark Schwager joins their ranks.

Mark has served on the East Greenwich Town Council, the Planning Board, the Municipal Land Trust, and on the Board of Commissioners for the Fire Department.

He was involved in negotiations with New England Tech and the renovation of the Swift (Gym) Community Center. Also, the construction of the Police Station, Cole Middle School, Scalloptown Park, the school athletic fields and Briggs-Boesch Farm. In addition he supports at least seven other town groups, organizations and foundations.

Schwager is also a board certified physician who focuses on geriatrics, primary care and preventive medicine.

He and his wife, Dr. Patricia Flanagan, and their three children, live in East Greenwich. He finds it a great place to live and is dedicated to the town and works hard to make East Greenwich one of the best places to live in Rhode Island.

It is for all his efforts and his dedication to East Greenwich that Dr. Mark Schwager has been chosen as the 2019 recipient of the EGHS Wall of Honor Appreciation Award.
