Martin passes away at 19

There was perhaps no greater fan of sports, especially football, than Warwick’s Andrew Martin.

Martin grew up in Warwick Neck and attended St. Rose Elementary School and would later spend his first three years of high school at Vets, then complete his high school career at Pilgrim.

Martin was diagnosed with Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) at a young age. A-T is a rare genetic disease that affects approximately one in 40,000 children. The disease causes progressive loss of muscle control, immune system problems, extreme fatigue and a high rate of cancer.

Despite the disease, Martin lived his life to the fullest and was determined to make his mark in the Warwick athletics community.

Football was his first love, and he was a devoted Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He joined the Vets football team his freshman year and would continue to be a member until he joined the Patriots during his senior year in 2016.

Martin quickly became one of the most recognizable and popular kids on the sidelines, and would help the team in a number of capacities including handing out water throughout each game. Martin loved football, loved the team, and missed only two games during his career when he traveled with family out of state.

Martin also helped contribute to the basketball teams. One of the highlights of his career in sports came during his freshman basketball season, when he got to play in the final minutes of the final game of the season.

Martin passed away Tuesday night at the age of 19 with his family after years of battling A-T.

Although the Warwick community will certainly miss Martin’s presence in the sports community, his memory and lasting impact on those around him will last forever.
