The following statement was issued from the Mayor's office at 2:05 on Friday:
Mayor Joseph Solomon has declared a state of emergency for the City of Warwick, Rhode Island, in order to more proactively and effectively address the threats presented by the COVID-19 virus. Under the state of emergency, Warwick’s Emergency Operations Plan is in effect and its Municipal COVID-19/Coronavirus Response Task Force has been activated.
The state of emergency for the City of Warwick is effective immediately and will be in place until further notice.
“This isn’t a step I take lightly, but it is a necessary action at this time to ensure the safety of our City. With an international airport, a train station, and numerous hotels, Warwick is a gateway to Rhode Island for many travelers,” said Mayor Solomon. “In talking about methods to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the best strategy is containment. It is time to practice what we preach in response to this looming pandemic. None of this means anyone should panic, but it helps us put a series of precautions in place – not only for the safety of our residents, but our visitors as well. My number one priority is ensuring that everyone in Warwick is safe.”
Under the state of emergency, all municipal board and commission meetings, including the City Council, Zoning and Planning Boards, and Municipal and Probate Courts are cancelled until further notice. At this time, the City of Warwick remains open, but departments are making adjustments in accordance with the City’s state of emergency, as well as the guidelines set forth by Governor Raimondo and the Rhode Island Department of Health.
The City of Warwick has cancelled all programming at the City’s senior centers, but boxed meals are available for seniors to pick up. The City’s Transwick Transportation is available to transport boxed lunches to homebound senior citizens.
The McDermott Aquatic Center is closed until further notice, as are the Thayer/Warburton Ice Arenas.
To date, there are no presumptive cases or positive tests of COVID-19 in Warwick. This declaration is an attempt to mitigate and prevent future cases of the virus.

So I spent some time with my friend who is a retired Providence Cop. A good, old school guy who has a great reputation. He was telling me that the reason so many of the Providence cops took the fake disability route back in the 80's and 90's was because they got their 66 2/3 tax free pension. But on top of that they also got all of their contributions that they made into the pension system back.
It really puts these disabilities under a different light, there were significant financial benefits to sell out ones integrity and get that sweet disability.

I just read the biased article on pensions you sited. The author wants public pensions put into the SS system. He states that public pensioners shouldn't be better off than those on social security. Really? People contribute no more than 7% of a limited amount of their pay to the SS fund. Public pensions require a percentage way above that. When I retired, the contribution was a whopping 11%. People in some places in RI are now paying 14%. That's a huge disparity.
In any event, should the world economy collapse as the author (hopes?) states, social security will need to take a beating along with public pensioners.

Anytime the government doesn't make it's employees follow the laws it forces the rest of society to follow it's a bad deal. Sure employees pay about 7.5% FICA taxes, but so do their employers. If you're a private contractor you pay both sides, 15%. What % of public sector workers income do the taxpayers match for them?
Government has screwed the American people over by having different retirement systems. One for itself & one for the rest of us. Maybe the Coronavirus recession will be a catalyst for change into a more equitable system.

The problem is that a day off for UNION BUSINESS, I don't believe, is supposed to be for a private union function, but used while negotiating contracts, grievances, with City, etc.. On top of that, while he gets this night off, to attend their own private function, where taxpayers aren't allowed, we the taxpayers paid him for 14 hours unethically and possibly fraudulently, or receiving money under false pretenses, and we also paid his replacement at probably 14 hours at time and a half. So the taxpayers paid for 35 hours so WFD Union President could attend a union held private function, where I don't believe he was being promoted, and other on duty firefighters were allowed to also go with their City provided vehicles. SOUNDS ILLEGAL, or at least unethical and immoral to me.
I Guess the same scamming, cheating, and gaming the system in WFD is still happening ! Real professionals....lmfao

davebarry: Cogent points. But two questions. Would you endorse a plan that transitions younger government workers (say, under 35) from a defined benefit plan to a defined contribution plan? I would like something whereby taxpayers are not on the hook for former employees throughout their life expectancy. I have a personal friend who has been retired longer than they worked, and received far more pension income than they ever made while employed.
Second, would you support the ability of current workers to voluntarily transition from Social Security to a complete defined contribution plan, with a return of all monies paid into the plan (no interest)? The notion that citizens in their 20's are required to pay into this is obscene.

While it's patently obvious that Mr. Howell has given up on this comment section and is simply playing out the string and fading into the sunset, the fact remains it's still a public website, and to allow Johnny Sweat Pants to make threats of physical violence against other posters is totally irresponsible journalism.
But fear not, a screen shot of the threatening comments by Sweat Pants has been saved and sent to the proper law enforcement authorities. It's one thing to use insults, but when you start making threats of physical violence against another poster, you have now crossed the line from annoying to criminal.
