NBA trainer Rob McClanaghan returned to his alma mater Bishop Hendricken on Tuesday afternoon to speak with student-athletes and to promote his new book titled “Net Work: Training the NBA’s Best and Finding the Keys to Greatness.”

McClanaghan is a former Hendricken standout basketball player who is originally from Cranston. After graduating high school, he went on to be a walk on for the Syracuse men’s team and would compete in three NCAA Tournaments.

From there, he began coaching at Hendricken and training local youth players. After years of networking, promoting himself and mastering a concrete training regimen for his clients, his business grew to college and eventually the NBA.

Some of the names that McClanaghan has worked with include: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, John Wall, Al Horford, Derrick Rose and Candace Parker.

His new book tells the story of his unlikely journey from the Ocean State to becoming arguably the NBA’s top trainer. It also touches on the importance of establishing relationships, both professionally and personally, building connections, and self belief.

McClanaghan was excited to get his book tour underway and to see some familiar faces in his home state.

“It’s cool, this has been a two-year process, really it’s been like a 25-year process to get this book going. I did another book signing in Rhode Island the other day and it was great to see so many people come out that have helped me along the way show their support. It was a fun, emotional day. Now to be back here at Hendricken where it all started, I am looking forward to it and I’m hoping to give something back to these kids,” said McClanaghan prior to his presentation and signing.

McClanaghan still keeps close touch with many of his former contacts, including Hendricken basketball coach and athletic director Jamal Gomes, and remembers his days donning the green and gold.

“Rhode Island is where it all started, for sure. I have been all around the world, but it always comes back to Rhode Island. It feels good to come back and to give these kids some info on how they can follow the path I took if they choose to,” said McClanaghan.

His hope is to inspire his readers while also giving them quality advice for any career they may pursue.

“It’s about my experience, building networks and my relationships, and how that all matters in any profession that you do. Like today, if I didn’t have connections at Hendricken, this wouldn’t be happening. It all comes full circle,” said McClanaghan. “There are some cool basketball stories in there, but I really focus on the importance of building those relationships and how I networked myself as much as I could.”
