Savage & Savage wins 2nd straight North title

For the second consecutive season, Savage & Savage took home the Warwick North Little League Major League Championship, topping Bo’s Billiards 16-8 in the title game at the pit.

Savage & Savage has been on an impressive run over the past two years, not only claiming back-to-back titles for Warwick North, but also winning last year’s City Championship and also sending numerous players to the league’s All-Star team.

“We had a good team, they’re a good group of boys,” said Savage & Savage coach Tom Doyle, who was impressed with the competition throughout the league this year. “You never know what’s going to happen, but you hope (to win it all). There are some other good teams that were returning as well, the league was full of great teams, there was some quality baseball.”

Although Savage & Savage put up big numbers throughout the regular season, and cruised to first place with a 15-1 record, pitching was the key to success, according to Doyle.

“It’s all about pitching, that’s what helped us win this season. That really helped us, we had three guys that could legitimately throw, so when you have guys like that, that can produce on a daily basis, it certainly helps your team,” said Doyle.

Another advantage that Savage & Savage carried into the spring season was experience. The club returned seven 12-year-olds from last year’s championship team, as well as two 11-year-olds that also got saw postseason action in 2018. That continuity between the players and coaches paid dividends throughout the season, especially down the stretch in the playoffs.

“We only lost three guys from last year so our core was the same ... when you have seven returning 12-year-olds and two 11-year-olds, it usually works out well for you. We were lucky enough to win it last year, we had a lot of returners that just kept playing. We only return two 11-year-olds next year so we’ll see how it goes,” said Doyle. “I have had some of these guys since they were 4 years old, our coaches have been coaching with me for years as well, the (continuity) had been huge, the parents are wonderful as well. These kids though, they’re good boys, it’s easy to coach them.”

Warwick North will now set its sights on this summer’s All-Star tournament, which begins this weekend at the pit. Doyle, who coaches the North 11-year-old team, expects another summer of tough competition, and believes that the Ocean State hosts some of the region’s premier Little League clubs.

“District 3 in Rhode Island is home to some of the best baseball in New England so it should be exiting,” said Doyle. “Between Warwick, Coventry, some of the best Little League in the area is right here.”

Members of the Savage & Savage team include: Derek Asciolla, Andrew Banspach, Owen Carter, Paul Doyle, Aidan Forcier, Connor Forcier, Henry Kearns, Michael Mainelli, Sheamus Monahan, Matthew Moretti, Jacob Oliveira and Paul Smith. Coaches included Doyle, as well as assistant coaches Jaime Banspach, Tom Doyle, and James Forcier.
