Open our country

To the Editor:

My head is ready to explode, so I had to send this letter to the editor.

I am 77 years old. I have high blood pressure, diabetes, lung disease, aortic aneurysms, heart failure, three strokes, kidney disease, and who knows what else.

My head explodes when I hear should we reopen our country or not. Should we protect mostly people like me who are at a higher risk of dying? Should we wait until we have a vaccine? Should we? Should we? Should we?

I believe in the natural order of things. We are born, we go through childhood and young adulthood, we are educated along the way, we get married, we have children, we provide for our children, and they in turn have children and expand our family. We not only provide our family with the financial security to prosper but we give them our wisdom, and our values, to become the best human being possible. Then we die.

My fellow senior citizens who are in my situation are not uninformed nor are we incapable of making life or death decisions for ourselves. I believe that if we were given a choice between putting these draconian measures in place to give us a few more years of life or possibly destroying the future of our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren the choice would be simple for me.

OPEN UP OUR COUNTRY DON’T LET THE MANY SUFFER FOR THE FEW!

My head has gone down to normal size. Thank you for listening.

I agree. If given a choice between a small chance of risking my life and a large chance of having the government telling us all what to do for the rest of our lives I say open up the country.

I disagree with your contention that you should individually have the right to choose in this case. Freedom is a communal activity, not an individually selfish choice. We are only free to the extent that we choose what is best for our community. In this case, staying home, however difficult, is necessary to keep the virus from spreading. This includes giving up communal activity in order that the community is free and safe. If we open up too soon, the "many will suffer for the few" like you, just to quote you.
