Pats come up big at class meet, finish third

La Salle and Classical are ranked first and second in the outdoor track coaches poll, making it a tall task for anyone else to compete with them at the Central Division Championships.

The Pilgrim girls were the best of the rest.

The Pats placed third at Tuesday’s championships held at Cranston West, behind only La Salle and Classical. La Salle won with 186 points, Classical finished second at 144 and Pilgrim took third with 102. Toll Gate was sixth with 36 points and Vets came in eighth with two points.

Standouts Destinee Barrette, Becca O’Donnell and Melanie Brunelle led the way for Pilgrim.

Barrette competed in all four throwing events and placed top-three in each. She won the shot put, took second in the hammer and finished third in both the discus and the javelin.

O’Donnell, the indoor track long jump state champion, won the long jump and the triple jump. She also set a new Central Division Championship record in the long jump with her leap of 17-04.50.

Brunelle won the high jump, took third in the triple jump and grabbed fifth in the 100 hurdles.

Also chipping in for the Pats, Kayda Phillip took second in the long jump, Michele Sanchez finished third in the shot put, Maddison Caron took fourth in the shot and fifth in the hammer, Natalie Tocco finished fourth in the 3,000, Danika Wayss finished sixth in the 1,500 and Elicia Nemirow took sixth in the javelin. The Pats also took third in the 4x400 relay and fifth in the 4x100.
