The pride of a job well done was palpable.
The Warwick School Committee honored the Pilgrim High School varsity ice hockey team on Tuesday night following their championship season, which concluded with dominating 5-1 and 7-0 victories in their best of three series against West Warwick/Exeter/West Greenwich in March. They did not lose a game in the postseason and went 13-4-1 in the regular season in Divison III.
“Last year they knocked on the door and almost won the championship, but this year they came back even more determined and took home the first state championship in many years,” said Warwick Athletic Director Kenneth Rix.
It had indeed been 28 years since Pilgrim last swarmed the ice in triumph over all other competitors in their division. Each player got a certificate from the committee and gathered on the stage at Warwick Veterans Middle School for a group picture.
“I want to congratulate our team, our players,” said Pilgrim principal Gerald Habershaw. “We really proved ourselves in the finals as the best team in Division III. We have the best coaching staff there is. We’re really proud of these kids and how they conducted themselves on the ice and off the ice. Great job guys.”
