The Pilgrim boys basketball team fell to visiting Portsmouth 62-48 on Tuesday evening.

Despite leading late in the first half, the Pats were unable to keep pace with the high-flying Portsmouth offense down the stretch, that was led by Jack Skrzypiec with 23 points.

“In the first half we wanted to play him man to man but it was tough because he was hitting some shots, they have a few weapons that you need to worry about. At halftime we switched to zone and we limited him so our defense did a better job. He was definitely tough, he hit some tough shots,” said Pilgrim coach Matt Fontaine of Skrzypiec. “We were up (late) in the first half but they went on a little run to take the lead going into halftime and then they came out and scored the first five points in the second. We just weren’t able to put together a run (of our own). We battled, but they hit some tough shots, they made some layups, they got 23 free throws, it’s just kind of the story of our season right now. The kids are working hard tough.”

Pilgrim was led by Jared Reminder with 15 points while Dana Baptiste and Kenny Rix each added nine. Parker Mason chipped in 14 points for Portsmouth while Justin Parsons scored 10.

The loss drops the Pats to 2-7 in league play and 4-9 overall. Although Pilgrim has struggled as of late, Fontaine believes that the Pats’ shooting troubles are fixable moving forward.

“We have these dips, we go through these spurts where we just can’t finish our shots. We’re getting good looks but the shots just aren’t falling. It’s not a depth thing, we have plenty of guys to go to. I thought we did a better job of rebounding, we got some turnovers. If we hit a few more of those shots then that 14-point deficit becomes a six, or four-point game and you have a chance. That’s all you ask for with five minutes to go, you just want a chance,” said Fontaine.

The Pats will head to Chariho on Friday evening, and hope to find their way back into the win column and build some momentum for the second half of the season.

“It’s the same thing, we had a halftime lead on Tiverton who is one of the top teams record-wise, we had a halftime lead at Wheeler but Dave D’Andrea got injured and couldn’t play in the second half, even (tonight) Dana Baptiste made three 3-pointers in the first half but hurt his ankle and couldn’t go in the second. We’re in every game, we compete every game, we just need to find a way to get back in the win column,” said Fontaine. “Every night is a battle in D2.”
