Lady Pats set for 2019

The Pilgrim softball team enjoyed a historic season last year, finishing with a 13-3 record in Division I and advancing to the second round of the postseason.

The Lady Pats return the large majority of its club from last year, and are seated as one of the top contenders heading into this spring.

“So far so good, we have some talent and we have some speed. This is about as fast of a team that we have had in a long time, we are quick which will work to our advantage. We have a veteran team, we may have some new kids out there starting but we’re a very veteran team. We have a lot of kids that played a lot of innings last year,” said Pilgrim coach Paul Kennedy, who believes that experience will be key this season. “(Losing last year) is a motivating factor this year … we know what it is like to win at RIC but we also know what it’s like to lose at RIC. We’re trying to use that to our advantage, keeping the kids motivated won’t be an issue this year though. We have a lot of talent so our job is to make the most of the talent that we’ve been given.”

Pilgrim only has two seniors on the roster this year in UMaine commit Kat Fallon and Meg Cooney. Kennedy expects a big year from his two senior captains.

“They’re positive, they’re optimistic, they’re excited. They’re all those things that a coach loves to see, they’re driven, they’re hard-working, motivation won’t be an issue this year. We have two very good senor captains in Kat Fallon and Meg Cooney that will keep them motivated,” said Kennedy. “I want to win every year, but these two seniors are special. They’re the only two seniors on our roster, so to say that I want to win it for them is an understatement. They’re both tremendous people and I would love to have a good season for those two seniors.”

With the season opening this week, Kennedy hopes to see the team play well-rounded softball, and to get adjusted to the new lineup this spring.

“Softball begins and ends in the circle. We need a big year from Kat and Emily Carter, I believe that we’re the only team in the state to bring back two varsity pitchers with at least eight wins. We also have a few new positions, including first base. It was be about how quickly we can fill those spots and get the lineup we want,” said Kennedy. “We will hit but right now we’re really concentrating on defense, we also have to stay healthy like every team does. We need to have a big year from our veterans.”
