Woman charged with DUI following accident

On May 31 at 11:23 p.m., Officers Michael Harris and Melissa Pinheiro were dispatched to the residence at 115 Sturbridge Drive in response to a motor vehicle. The officers were advised that a single car struck a pole at the location.

Upon arrival, Harris observed a blue four-door Mazda in the center of the road with heavy damage on the front end of the passenger side. Several bystanders told Harris they believed the driver was intoxicated. The driver was identified as Nicole Hatton, 29, of 112 Sturbridge Drive, Warwick. She was alone in the car and had facial injuries and a cut lip from the accident. According to the report Hatton told Harris that she was coming from a liquor store on Post Road in North Kingstown, but that she had not been drinking. Once Harris told her he could smell alcohol on her breath, she admitted to drinking alcohol earlier in the evening, around 4 p.m. When asked how the accident occurred, Hatton said that she was on her way home when a squirrel ran across the road, causing her to swerve and hit the pole. She insisted the animal was a squirrel, and Harris noted that squirrels are not typically nocturnal. He also noted that Hatton’s speech was slurred, her face was red, and her eyes were bloodshot and watery. She was also reported to be repeating herself and drastically changing her attitude throughout her conversation with Officer Harris, from laughing to hysterically crying.

Hatton was removed from her car by Warwick rescue and put on a stretcher. She became angry with the rescue personnel and allegedly threatened to punch someone in the face, so she was strapped to a gurney and wheeled to the ambulance. Officer Pinheiro remained on the scene to file an accident report while Officer Harris accompanied Hatton to the hospital. In the ambulance, Hatton reported her date of birth as 1996 and laughed when Harris corrected her. Then Harris asked her again what she had to drink that night, and Hatton reported that she had two white Zinfandel wines. Harris noticed a stain on her blouse that looked like red wine, and when asked Hatton admitted that she also drank red wine. She said her last drink was around 8 p.m.

Hatton said that she had gone to a bar in North Kingstown around 4 p.m. and then a movie at 6:30 p.m. She reported her last stop as the North Kingstown liquor store at 8 p.m. While in the ambulance, she told Harris she thought it was 10 p.m. It was actually 12 a.m. and Hatton could not account for the last two hours. She denied taking any narcotics or drugs and complied with a sobriety test. Harris conducted a horizontal gaze nystagmus test while Hatton was still in the gurney and a neck brace, and reported that he observed six indications of intoxications out of a possible six.

At the emergency room, Hatton gave the incorrect date of birth for a second time. Her mother arrived and told Hatton not to say anything and that a lawyer had been contacted. She was asked to leave the room when Harris reminded her of the ongoing investigation for driving while intoxicated. Hatton refused a blood test and was issued violations for laned roadway, DUI drugs/alcohol first offense and refusal to submit a chemical test first offense. Due to her injuries, Hatton was summonsed and released with upcoming court dates.

Woman reports stolen phone

On May 30 at 1:33 p.m., Warwick Police Department officers, Albert Marano, Jr. and Matthew Morretti, were dispatched to Warwick police headquarters when a woman reported larceny. The Warwick woman claimed her cell phone was stolen while she was shopping at Old Navy in the Warwick Mall earlier that afternoon. After trying on some clothes, the woman noticed her phone was missing. She remembered that someone had bumped into her while she was near the checkout area. The dressing room personnel and Old Navy security did not find any missing phones and when Penta’s boyfriend tried to call it, the phone was off. Officer Marano contacted Old Navy security for video surveillance.

Theft from parked car

On May 27 at 5:07 p.m., Officer Walter Larson was dispatched to Warwick police headquarters for a report of larceny from a motor vehicle. A 28-year old Warwick man reported that his car was broken into while it was parked in front of his residence on Nolbeth Drive on May 26 around 11 p.m. He reported that he was missing a pair of Costa del Mar sunglasses, valued at $270, and a pair of Oakley sunglasses, valued at $150. The man said he didn’t notice anyone in the area and believed his car was locked when he left it. There are no suspects at this time.

Ms. Hatton almost made it home- I imagine it'll be a while before she's making eye contact with the neighbors...

Another teachable moment and a good, "I knew I had a problem when..." story for court-ordered rehab and AA meetings.
