DENNY’S DINE AND DASH

Two suspects who are alleged to have stolen tax return funds from a waitress at Denny’s restaurant have been arrested.

According to police reports, in the early morning hours of February 23, two unidentified white females working as a team stole from the purse of a waitress at the Denny's Restaurant located at 1448 Hartford Ave. The purse contained the waitress's recently cashed tax return, and the suspects then fled the scene in a dark colored Nissan Altima bearing an unknown RI license plate number. The vehicle was equipped with a sunroof and was missing both front hubcap

The police department created a Facebook post containing images of the suspects and their vehicle, which then went viral and was seen by thousands.

On March 3 at 4 p.m., Ashley Lavoie, 28, of 23 Liberty St. in East Taunton, Massachusetts, responded to police headquarters to provide information concerning her involvement in the case. After being informed of her rights by detectives, she denied having any knowledge of the theft and identified a Haley Coy as the person responsible for the theft. She then provided detectives with Coy’s contact and identifying information. She also provided detectives with a statement regarding her involvement.

Lavoie was then placed under arrest, and charged with conspiracy to commit a larceny, a felony. She was processed and held, then arraigned before Justice of the Peace Thomas O’Brien at headquarters. She was released on $10,000 personal recognizance with a June 2 court date.

On March 9 at approximately 11 a.m., Detectives John DeAngelis and Seth Crosby responded to 132 Harold Street, third floor, in Providence in an attempt to locate Haylee Coy, 23, of the same address. Upon arrival the detectives located Coy, who was placed under arrest without incident and transported to police headquarters in Johnston.

After being read her rights, Coy informed the officers that she and Lavoie were having a meal together at Denny’s on February 23. During that time, they had a conversation with the waitress and observed a large amount of cash in her wallet. Coy told the detectives that she and Lavoie then conspired to steal the money. She explained that while Lavoie was in the bathroom with the waitress, she went behind the service counter, reached into the waitress’s handbag and took a wallet. The pair then exited the eatery.

Coy added that there was $1,700 cash in the wallet, and that she gave Lavoie $900 of the money before throwing the wallet from her vehicle. She told Detective DeAngelis that she was sorry she stole the waitress’ money and intended on paying her back. She then provided a written statement detailing her confession.

Coy was arraigned before Judge McCaffrey for felony charges of larceny and conspiracy. Bail was set at $5,000 personal recognizance, along with a court date of June 1.

DIDN’T MAKE A CLEAN GETAWAY

A suspect police claim shoplifted body washes from CVS on multiple occasions has been apprehended.

Patrolman Richard Varan responded to the Hartford Avenue CVS on October 28, 2016, for a shoplifting complaint. He spoke with store security, who stated they observed an older white male enter the store around 10:30 p.m. and proceed to the body wash aisle. There he selected 12 bottles of Dove body was products, valued at $87.88 and placed them in a red carry basket. The suspect then proceeded to the cosmetic aisle, where he placed the basket on the ground and exited the store.

At 10:35 p.m., the man reentered the store, grabbed the basket and exited without making any attempts to pay. Patrolman Varan’s report was then forwarded to detectives for review.

On Nov. 17 around 3 p.m., Patrolman Derek Parascandolo responded to the same CVS store to take a report of a shoplifting incident earlier that day. He was advised by loss prevention that they had reviewed the day’s security footage, and at around 7:57 a.m. a male entered the business, walked to the body wash aisle, and placed 18 bottles of body wash, valued at $155.22, in a red basket. He then exited the store without making an attempt to pay and began to walk east on Hartford Avenue.

Patrolman Parascandolo recognized the suspect as the same man from the previous shoplifting incident. His report was forwarded for review, and Detective Steven Lopez, who was familiar with the suspect, identified him as Paul Nicholson, 50, of 83 Hobson Ave. in North Providence.

Nicholson had four outstanding Superior Court full bench warrants, and had 30 charges on his Rhode Island Bureau of Criminal Investigation report. A criminal complaint, affidavit and arrest warrant were then drafted for him.

On March 8, the Warwick Police Department picked up Nicholson on shoplifting charges out of their city. He was transported to the Third District Court, where he was arraigned before Judge McCaffrey for the outstanding CVS shoplifting charges. Bail with surety was set at $2,000, and a pretrial conference scheduled for March 20. Nicholson was then held at the ACI.

OUTSTANDING WARRANT

On March 8 around 7 p.m., Patrolman Richard Varan observed a vehicle traveling eastbound on Hartford Avenue bearing a passenger registration plate on a commercial vehicle. A traffic stop was then initiated on the area of 9 South Fairview Avenue.

The officer identified the operator as Steven Sarchione, 31, of 41 Union Avenue in Johnston. A check through the DMV revealed that Sarchione had a suspended license, and that the vehicle’s plates belonged to an Acura, not the Ford F-150 truck at the scene. A background check also discovered that Sarchione was wanted on an active Superior Court full bench warrant.

Sarchione was then placed under arrest, his car was towed, and he was transported to police headquarters. He was issued a Third District Court summons for operating a motor vehicle on a suspended driver’s license, third offense, and for operating an unregistered motor vehicle.
