DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On Sept. 22 at approximately 3:01 p.m. Officers Thomas Greene and Kyle Fitzsimmons responded to the report of a car accident on Centerville Ave. Dispatch reported that there were no accidents but the cars were in the roadway.

The driver of the vehicle who hit another vehicle from behind was identified as David Howarth, 66, of 163 Preston Ave. in Cranston. While the officer was getting Howarth’s license and registration, Howarth seemed confused, was unsteady on his feet, and was delayed in his responses to the officer.

Howarth said he was coming from Cowesett and trying to get home, and said he had accidentally hit the person in front of him. His speech was slurred during the conversation, according to the officer, and he said he had drunk two bottles of beer that day.

The officer decided to conduct a series of field sobriety tests, during which he observed nearly all clues indicating that Howarth was impaired. Howarth was so unsteady on his feet that the officer did not conduct the one leg stand test.

Howarth was transported to police headquarters, where he agreed to taking B.A.C. tests. However, he kept putting his fingers in his mouth and they couldn’t do the tests, so it was considered a refusal on Howarth’s part.

Howarth was charged with DUI/Drugs/Alcohol (1st Offense) – B.A.C. Unknown as well as Refusal to Submit to Chemical Test. He was then held until he could be picked up by a sober adult and was issued court summons.

LARCENY

On Sept. 21 at approximately 12:37 p.m. Officer Kyle Fitzsimmons met with a larceny victim in police headquarters.

The victim told him that while he was parked at the Warwick Medical Building on Bald Hill Road he had left his fishing equipment in the bed of his truck, and then after he left he realized that it was stolen.

The items stolen included four spinning rods and four reels, one fly rod and reel, one fishing backpack with waders, two fly fishing vests, four additional fly reels, and one U.S. military Vietnam era butt pack with the letters “BONN” written on it, which had more spinning tackle inside of it.

The total value of the merchandise was approximately $1,000, according to the victim. The case was forwarded to detectives.

On Sept. 24 at approximately 8:00 p.m. Officer Timothy Tavares met with a larceny victim at police headquarters.

The man said that while he was doing yard work at a rental property on Gorton Lake Blvd. two items were stolen from that back of his truck. One was a backpack blower valued at $549 and the other was a hedge trimmer valued at $287.64.

There were no suspects at the time and the items did not have serial numbers, and the man wanted to report it in case the items were recovered. A written statement was placed into records.

On Sept. 23 at approximately 12:30 p.m. Officer Rose Michel responded to the Panera Bread on Bald Hill Rd. for the report of a stolen wallet.

The reporting party said the wallet was stolen from her bag that morning while she was sitting at a table. She said that an couple in their 30s had sat next to her and gotten so close to her at one point that she found it awkward and moved her bag. She realized later that the wallet was gone.

The wallet contained three credit cards, a debit card, a variety of gift cards, and her license and health insurance card. The victim cancelled all the cards while she was at police headquarters, but they found that purchases had been made on the credit and gift cards. The report was forwarded to detectives.

POSSESSION

On Sept. 19 at approximately 8:44 p.m. Officer David Boardman pulled over a car on 95 North for speeding, and because its registration came back to a different car than it was.

The passenger in the car was identified as Jose Perez, 18, of 28 Union Ave. Apt. #2 in Providence. Perez had a large amount of loose leaf marijuana on his lap and a blunt next to him. The marijuana was seized and weighed in at 2.5 grams. Perez was issued a citation for possession of marijuana, 1 oz. or less.

SHOPLIFTING

On Sept. 18 at approximately 4:13 p.m. Officer Matthew Caradimos responded to the J.C. Penney at the Warwick Mall for the report of a shoplifting in progress. It was reported that two males had been shoplifting and they had fled the scene in a Honda toward the Showcase Cinema.

The officer found a white Honda civic parked outside the movie theatre with a variety of clothing items, with their price tags still on, strewn around the back seat. One suspect had been described as wearing a Patriots jersey, which was also found in the back seat, and the other was last seen wearing a red sweatshirt.

The officer found one of the suspects sitting outside the movie theatre, and he appeared very nervous and kept trying to make a phone call. After questioning, the officer placed the male in handcuffs and the suspect said he had made a mistake, and also said the other male was in the bathroom.

An assisting officer stood with that suspect, identified as Oscar Tapia, 18, of 320 Public St. in Providence, while Officer Caradimos took the other suspect, identified as Max Valerio, 18. Both were taken to police headquarters.

The items the pair had stolen from the store included Nike sweat pants, a Patriots jersey, and other miscellaneous clothing. The total value of the merchandise was $710.

Tapia and Valerio were charged with shoplifting – misdemeanor and given court summons.

On Sept. 21 at approximately 8:01 p.m. Officer Thomas Duncan responded to the report of a shoplifting that had happened at the Macy’s at the Warwick Mall.

The loss prevention associate said that he saw a male, later identified as Eric Munos Martinez, 44, of 21 Cutler St. Apt. #2 in Providence selecting a variety of clothing items from the store and go to the fitting room. He then exited the fitting room with two of the clothing items and switched the price tags on a $495 Ralph Lauren Coat and a $135 Tommy Bahama shirt so they said they actually cost $39.96 and $16.93, respectively. He then paid that much for the items, but was then detained by the loss prevention associate.

Martinez was taken to police headquarters, where he was charged with Shoplifting – Misdemeanor and released on court summons. The merchandise was recovered by the store.

WARRANTS

On Sept. 19 at approximately 12:24 p.m. Officer Gregory Accinno assisted with a traffic stop on Oakland Beach Ave. in which one of the passengers had a warrant out on him.

The passenger was identified as Randy James, 30, of 65 William Ellery Place in Providence, who had a bench warrant out on him from 6th district court based on a charge out of the Pawtucket Police Dept. James was taken to police headquarters and later picked up by Pawtucket Police.

On Sept. 24 at approximately 6:09 p.m. Sergeant John Curley IV pulled over a car on Toll Gate Rd. after checking in the system that it was registered to a subject that had a bench warrant out on him from Providence Police for failing to appear, with the original charge being Receiving Stolen Goods and Grand Theft, over $1,500.

The driver was identified as Christopher Dercole, 45, of 39 Vine St. Apt. #25 in West Warwick. Dercole was taken to police headquarters and was later transported to the ACI because of the warrant out on him.
