Pursuing a stronger, healthier future for CNE

Posted

Care New England is moving forward for a stronger, healthier future. We are committed in our goal of providing Rhode Island with the highest levels of quality, service, and access.

In mid-July, Care New England (CNE) announced that it was formally withdrawing from negotiations with Lifespan and Brown University after more than a month of important discussions exploring ways to come together as a unified academic medical center.

The discussions were collaborative, mutually respectful, and held honestly and transparently. We would like to thank the Governor’s Office, The Rhode Island Foundation, and The Partnership for Rhode Island for their leadership throughout this important process, along with all of our professional colleagues at Lifespan and Brown University. It was important work that required our singular focus and collective efforts. In the end, it just did not prove to be the right opportunity at this time.

Redefining and reshaping the health care landscape is no small task. As those responsible for the fiduciary oversight of CNE, the Board concluded that it is in the best interest of CNE and the community we serve, to pursue this path forward for a stronger, healthier future for Care New England, and most importantly, for our patients.

With more than 7,000 staff, clinicians, and physicians, Care New England is ready and dedicated to reshaping health care in Rhode Island, but it has not been easy getting to this moment in time. CNE has implemented a remarkable turnaround with significant improvements, including rebounding from substantial financial losses, to now sustaining a small but positive operating margin. And most recently, after a challenging second quarter of 2019, we have bounced back with tremendous results in the third quarter.

It must also be said, this success would not have been possible were it not for the dedication and collaboration of our staff over the course of the past few years, wholly committed to our mission. We are incredibly grateful to them for their efforts and their ongoing successes.

Through their hard work and careful strategic planning, we have built exciting growth plans, clinical development opportunities, and plans for capital improvements. We are in the process of welcoming an array of new physicians across numerous specialties as we continue to broaden our services. We continue to dedicate great energy and focus on further offering the best possible access to care in the local community setting and that also includes building on the decade-long clinical affiliation with Brigham Health. We also look forward to expanding our collaboration with Lifespan and Brown University on new clinical and academic opportunities. We are confident and optimistic about the future and our place as a leading health care institution in Rhode Island.

We are here for you. We are here with you. We are Butler, Kent, and Women & Infants hospitals, Care New England Medical Group, Integra Community Care Network, The Providence Center, and the VNA of Care New England – all working together to care for our community with honesty, integrity, and clinical excellence.

Charles R. Reppucci is chair of the Care New England Board of Directors and James E. Fanale, MD, is president and CEO, Care New England.

You know, I could almost buy what your selling when you say, "We are here for you. We are here with you. We are Butler, Kent, and Women & Infants hospitals, Care New England Medical Group, Integra Community Care Network, The Providence Center, and the VNA of Care New England – all working together to care for our community with honesty, integrity, and clinical excellence." Except, often times it feels like you are in the DMV with the same level of care. I am not saying everyone but I am saying many I have encountered don't appear to love their job as much as you think they love their jobs.
