The Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra announces its March concert “Tomorrow’s Talent Today,” featuring the world premiere of I Dream a World, by internationally acclaimed composer, Roger Cichy. The piece is based upon the well-known poem of the same title by Langston Hughes, and was commissioned for the 60th anniversary of RICCO’s founding.

Cichy, a resident of Scituate, and professor of music composition at Providence College, was awarded a Boston/New England Regional Emmy Award in 2016 for his score for the documentary film “The American St. Nick.” Cichy also composed the score for the documentary “Remember Pearl Harbor” narrated by Tom Selleck, which aired in December on PBS.

Also being performed is Joseph Haydn’s moving Mass in Time of War, showcasing the winners of RICCO’s Ninth Annual Collegiate Vocal Competition, which was held on October 22, 2016 at the Music Mansion in Providence. The winners were chosen from among twenty candidates from seven institutions of higher education in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. The soloists are Mahoko Taniguchi, Soprano - Boston Conservatory at Berklee; Wei En Chan, Countertenor- The New England Conservatory; Kyle Buonfiglio, Tenor - Rhode Island College; and Matthew Chastain, Baritone – University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Rounding out the program will be Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 in D Major (The Haffner).

The Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra was established in 1957 and consists of approximately 90 men and women

from more than two dozen towns in Rhode Island and Southern Massachusetts. The Chorale’s professional orchestra

includes distinguished members of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra. The Chorale strives to ensure a growing

and vibrant arts culture through participation, outreach, education, and advocacy.

The event takes place Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 7:30 pm at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul on 30 Fenner Street in Providence. Tickets are $24-$30 for adults, $10 for students and can be purchased by calling 521-5670, visiting www.ricco.org, or emailing info@
