Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra classical concert American the Beautiful Feb. 25

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra presents an All-American Classical concert on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. at The Vets, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence. Music Director Larry Rachleff and the Philharmonic are joined by violinist Alexander Kerr on a “journey to New York City” as they perform the world premiere of James Stephenson’s Fantasie for Violin and Orchestra and Bernstein’s Serenade. The program begins with Copland’s "Appalachian Spring Suite" and ends with Gershwin’s "An American in Paris."

Before the concert from 7:00-7:25 Resident Conductor Francisco Noya presents an informal talk about the concert program in the Vets auditorium. The Taco/White Family Foundation sponsors this concert. WPRO News Talk 630 is the media sponsor for the season.

Raised in Alexandria, Va., Kerr balances an orchestral career with solo and chamber engagements throughout Europe, North America and the Far East. In 1996 he was appointed concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has also served as concertmaster of the Cincinnati and Charleston Symphonies and is currently Principal Guest Concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony.

Kerr has appeared as soloist with major orchestras throughout the United States and Europe and as a chamber musician at some of the world’s premier music festivals. He has collaborated with a number of the world’s top musicians, including Grammy winners Joshua Bell and Edgar Meyer. He recently toured Europe with acclaimed violinist Sarah Chang and members of the Berlin Philharmonic. Mr. Kerr is a faculty member of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music and the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado.
