Colonel Ann C. Assumpico, Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police and Director of the Department of Public Safety, announces the arrest of a Johnston woman in connection with the theft of nearly $287,000 from her former employer.

According to a press release, Monica Furtado, age 34, of 195 Shun Pike, Johnston, is charged with larceny over $1,500; obtaining money under false pretenses; and uttering and publishing – forgery.

The arrest stems from a complaint filed last July by the president of a Warwick company, where Ms. Furtado had worked as an office manager for seven years. The investigation revealed that Ms. Furtado had allegedly issued several forged checks to her private trucking company, Bella Transport, without the president’s knowledge or authorization.

Troopers from the Wickford Barracks and the Financial Crimes Unit later identified nearly 350 separate unauthorized checks and/or withdrawals totaling $286,729.85 in 20 different accounts in Monica Furtado’s name and that of her company.

Based on their investigation, Troopers obtained a warrant for Ms. Furtado’s arrest. She surrendered to the Wickford Barracks this afternoon and was released on personal recognizance, pending further court proceedings.

It's unknown whether she funneled TO her trucking company or laundered it THROUGH the company; if through the company and she wasn't living a opulent lifestyle, the money's probably gone to the casinos- no one does $287k worth of drugs in that time span and lives to tell about it (except Keith Richards).
