RIPTA launches art contest for bus pass

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has announced a call for art in honor of its 50th Anniversary. RIPTA is inviting the public to submit vibrant, eye-catching, unique designs for a bus pass that will celebrate the Authority’s 50 years of public transportation in Rhode Island.

“Creating a design contest for a commemorative pass is a great chance to engage local artists and give them the opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity,” said Barbara Polichetti, Director of Public Affairs for RIPTA. “It will be exciting to see what concepts people come up with to illustrate the evolution of the services we have provided the state for 50 years.”

The winner will receive a $25 gift card to Revolution American Bistro in Cranston, $25 gift card to Thirsty Beaver (Smithfield & Cranston), a Pizza Bowl certificate for six people at Lang’s Bowlarama ($75 value) and a Providence Bruins prize pack that includes four game tickets, a signed hat and hockey stick and more.

Rhode Island has had mass transit in one form or another since the mid-19th century, starting with steam locomotives and “horse car” railroads. The electric trolley car debuted in Newport around 1889, and over the years a number of different entities have been in charge of public transportation in the state – from the Union Railroad to the United Transit Company.  In 1964, the Rhode Island General Assembly created the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority, and RIPTA, as it came to be known, began operations on July 1, 1966.

All entries must be received by March 4, 2016. Contest rules and entry requirements are available online at RIPTA.com. All entries should be emailed to marketing@RIPTA.com and must adhere to the contest rules. The winner will be announced in early March.

How about an elderly person walking to the store because they can't afford to take the bus any more. Calling Norman Rockwell.
