Christian Arriaza’s hat trick and D.J. Anderson’s game-winner helped the Johnston boys’ soccer team get by Cranston East, 4-2, at Cranston Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Arriaza scored for the Panthers in the first half as the two teams went into the break tied at 1.
However, Arriaza would score twice more after halftime and Anderson added a goal of his own to help Johnston explode offensively over the final 40 minutes.
Edward DiLorenzo added an assist for the Panthers in the winning effort, and Ryan Lavoie was tremendous in goal, stopping 14 of the 16 shots sent his way.
With the victory, Johnston concluded its league slate with a record of 4-7-4, missing the playoffs by just two points.
Panthers down Blue Wave to end regular season
The Johnston girls’ soccer team completed an undefeated regular season on Friday afternoon, gliding past Hope by a final of 5-1.
Sophomore striker Bianca Robbins netted another hat trick to give her a state-best 43 goals on the season, and Gabriella Scarcella also chipped in a goal and an assist. Gabriella Sauro netted the other goal for the Panthers.
Kaylee Lameiro picked up the victory in goal, as Yorleny Escobedo was the only Hope player to get a shot by her in the second half.
Johnston will be the top seed out of Division III when the playoffs get underway next week.
Currently, the quarterfinals are scheduled for next Friday with matchups, times and venues to be determined.
