EG topples Warwick North

The Warwick North Little League 10-year-old All-Stars were clobbered by East Greenwich by a final score of 17-3 last week during Game 2 of the 10-year-old 2018 District Softball Championship Series at Bend Street Complex.

The official score of the contest was recorded as 12-2 because of the 10-run rule.

East Greenwich was led by starting pitcher Emma Manzo, who pitched a complete-game and struck out six while also hammering a 3-run inside-the-park home run.

Gretchen Dombeck started in the circle for Warwick North, pitching four innings while striking out seven.

“She pitched a lot this week, more than she usually does,” Warwick North manager Gary Dombeck said of Gretchen. “She pitched her heart out and kind of ran out of gas there towards the end, but she did a very good job. Very proud of her.”

The Warwick North manager brought in both Reagan Motta and Avry Dewar to pitch in relief late in the game so that the two prospects could get some experience pitching against All-Star competition.

“You can’t recreate that in practice or scrimmages, so we gave them a shot to get some experience for next year,” Dombeck said.

Warwick North squeaked by Manzo and East Greenwich 2-1 in the opening round of the tournament and then went on to shut out South Kingstown 10-0 in the second round before falling to East Greenwich in the final two games; 8-1 in Game 1 and then 12-2 in Game 2.

“We battled close in those first three games and I’m proud of our group to stay as close as they did,” Dombeck said.

“The girls got the first game,” Dombeck added. “Kind of surprised us a little bit. They played very well. We beat Emma in the first game, very proud of the girls for doing that. The second game was a little better for us as far as separation against South Kingstown, but we were in for a fight with this team playing two in a row, but we had a chance to keep it close and they prevailed.”

Dombeck struck out Maddie Kontz in the top of the third before walking both Sophia Williston and Brooke Fairbanks. Manzo then walloped a shot to deep left-center for a 3-run inside-the-park home run and gave East Greenwich a 3-0 edge.

Things would then get ugly in the top of the fifth.

Dombeck walked five straight batters to bring in two runs and up the East Greenwich advantage to 5-0. Next with the bases jammed, Fairbanks hit a two-run single through the middle and increased the East Greenwich advantage to 7-0. Then with none out, Brook Faunce earned a bases-loaded walk and extended the East Greenwich lead to 8-0.

That’s when the Warwick North manager pulled his starting pitcher and brought in Motta in relief. With the bases still loaded, Fairbanks and Manzo scored on back-to-back passed balls and increased the East Greenwich edge to 10-0. With the bases reloaded, Motta walked the next six hitters in a row, allowing five more runs to come in and that ballooned the East Greenwich advantage to 15-0.

Dewar came on to pitch with the bases still jammed and walked Manzo, which increased the East Greenwich lead to 16-0. East Greenwich’s last run came in when Abby McAuliffe earned a bases-loaded walk, which brought home Sara Walsh and upped the East Greenwich lead to 17-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Warwick North got an RBI single from catcher Ava Delvicario, which scored Gianna Myers and inched Warwick North to 17-1. Dombeck then ripped a shot at the pitcher and drove in Motta from third, making it 17-2. Delvicario scored from third on a passed ball to and got Warwick North to 17-3.
