Warwick PAL cruises 5-1 win

The Warwick Police Athletic League Connie Mack baseball team defeated North Providence by a score of 5-1 on Saturday morning at Pilgrim High School.

PAL starting pitcher Cam Armenti led the way, striking out eight over 6 2/3 innings. Darek Lallo led PAL offensively with two hits and two RBI. A.J. DeMedeiros gathered two hits, three stolen bases, and a run scored for North Providence.

Armenti, who plays for Pilgrim and will be a junior in the fall, was content with the performance of his team.

“It was a good team win and it’s going to be a great season,” Armenti said.

Armenti did well on the mound despite not pitching for about a month.

“I have a lot of confidence in Cam,” Warwick PAL head coach Bob Creamer said. “Cam’s a good pitcher. We have five or six really good pitchers on this team. I have confidence in all the guys and I knew that he was going to do a good job today. No doubts about that, whatsoever.”

“He’s an intense kid,” Creamer added. “Loves the game and plays hard. He respects the game and respects the coaches and that’s all we can ask for. He’s a hard worker.”

North Providence took an early 1-0 edge in the top of the third when with two outs, catcher Ben Rastelli drove in DeMedeiros.

PAL’s bats would then get going in the bottom of the fifth.

Tim Murley led off with an infield single. Andrew Merryfield then laid down a sacrifice bunt and moved Murley to second. With two down, Will Pariseau hit a routine ground ball at the shortstop, but the shortstop’s throw to first was high and went for an error, which allowed Murley to score and tie the game at 1.

Warwick’s Ryan Corrigan then smashed a dribbler down the first baseline and put runners at the corners. Armenti would drive in Pariseau with an infield single and put PAL up 2-1. Lallo hit a two-run single with bases loaded and while the second run was coming home, Lallo headed for second and when North Providence threw over to catch him, PAL’s Damon Coleman scored from third and upped the Warwick lead to 5-1.

“It took a few innings to wake up, but in the fifth inning the bats came alive a little bit and the boys did a good job,” Creamer said. “Cam did a great job and Tommy Mullane back there was a good battery. Good pitch calls, and Cam was on fire right to the end. Overall a good day.”

Armenti was very close to pitching a complete game, but was pulled with two outs in the top of the seventh after DeMedeiros launched a routine fly ball to shallow left field which fell in for a hit and extended the inning. Merryfield came on in relief and struck out Rastelli to end the game.

“His pitch count was getting up there,” Creamer said of Armenti. “You could tell his arm was getting a little tired. Two guys on base, it was time to pull him.”
