Vets falls to Feinstein, 60-45

The Warwick Vets Middle School Hurricanes were beaten 60-45 by the Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School of Coventry Falcons on Tuesday afternoon at home in boys basketball.

Feinstein was led by Nate Collins, who scored 17 points, Colby Frigon, who had 15, and Aidan Reardon, who chipped in 11.

Colby Barker headed the Hurricanes with 17 points while Jahden Jean-Baptiste added nine and Robert Vale had eight.

Warwick did a good job sharing the ball, but they just couldn’t get their shots to drop.

“We got the ball to where we wanted to get the ball, we just didn’t finish,” Vets head coach Nick Durand said. “We didn’t finish any shots in the first half. And then, that got us down. We put our heads down and then, they just took it to us.”

The Hurricanes have been without their starting point guard Griffen Taylor, an eighth grader, who went down with an injury during the first game of the season. Durand expects to have Taylor back next week.

Warwick and Feinstein traded 3-pointers to start the contest with Barker burying one for Vets before Reardon answered with one of his own for the Falcons.

Shortly after that, Feinstein got a little separation when Frigon dished to Tommy Turner for a corner 3-ball, which put the Falcons up 7-3.

Then, the Falcons added to their edge when they went on an 8-1 run, highlighted by a runner from Frigon and a putback from Collins, which put the Falcons up 11-4, three and a half minutes into the contest.

Ten minutes into the game, Feinstein held a 21-7 lead and took a 30-14 cushion into halftime.

Vets were able to get the deficit down to 35-23 with a little over 11 minutes to play, when Dylan Roberts dished to Barker for a 3-pointer and then, Jean-Baptiste followed that with a turnaround jumper on Warwick’s next trip down.

Nonetheless, Feinstein would go up by as much as 21 with 1:43 remaining before dribbling out the clock to the tune of a 60-45 victory.

Vets falls to 1-5 on the season while Feinstein improves to 3-3. Warwick played again on Wednesday afternoon at Chariho, but the results weren’t available at press time.  The Hurricanes host Winman (0-5) next Tuesday at 3:45 pm.
