An army of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island employees – more than 600 – some waving pompoms and all wearing white and blue t-shirts, left Providence corporate offices in buses Friday morning for a day of manual labor. It was a day many had prepared for. They had done their planning, assembling tools, creating work teams and drawing plans. Now came the job and, fortunately, initial forecasts proved incorrect. The sun broke through heavy clouds and, while steamy, crews would be able to tackle projects from clearing brush, painting barns to erecting fences and building playgrounds at the sites of 13 non-profits across the state. Common themes to the partnering non-profits, most of them proving services to children, are improving healthcare and access and encouraging wellness through fitness and nutrition. This was the sixth annual Blue across Rhode Island that has already provided 21,000 volunteer hours and $311,000 in funding to 47 agencies helping Rhode Islanders live better, healthier lives.
