A new Woodbury Union Church is rising from the ashes on the foundation of the former church that was severely damaged in a 2018 Thanksgiving eve fire. Work on the $1.5 million reconstruction has picked up in the last two months with the erection of roofs and new walls. Last week, as pictured here, Beach Avenue was closed temporarily as the city Water Division installed a larger water service to accommodate a sprinkler system for the church. Gary Christensen, who chairs the church rebuilding committee, said Monday a crane will be back on-site soon to lift trusses for a third section of roofing. He said the steeple, which will be made of fiberglass, is on order and will be installed near the entrance on Beach Avenue. Christensen noted that with improvements to Conimicut Village and businesses moving in, plus work on the church, “It’s nice to see everything coming together.” While the church will occupy the “same footprint,” changes are planned to make better use of interior space, including the use of chairs rather than pews in the sanctuary. Fortunately, the stained glass windows from both sides of the sanctuary were saved and will be reinstalled. Christensen was appreciative of St. Benedict Church that has been Woodbury’s home ever since the fire, yet he noted he looks forward to having their own space again. He’s hopeful that day will come in late May or early June this year. (Warwick Beacon photos)
