George Farrell, founder and chair of the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Honor Flight Hub that has conducted 17 flights transporting more than 500 World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C. was surprised by his board of directors when they honored him at the Nov. 12 “A Veterans Day of Honor” held at Twin River. In appreciation of his leadership and inspiration, vice chairman Wayne Moore presented Farrell with a bell bearing the emblem of the honor flight. A retired Providence fire chief, Farrell encountered a flight in Washington and returned to Rhode Island with the vision to create a Rhode Island hub. The state hub has been selected from 144 hubs across the country for the national “leading by example award.” (Warwick Beacon photos)
