Carrying on a tradition

At a Monday dinner at Top of the Bay, $1,000 scholarships in memory of James V. Johnson were presented to four Oakland Beach students. The scholarship program was established in 1987 by former Rep. Richard “Pop” Johnson in memory of his son, James, and has been carried on ever since by JONAH (Join Our Neighborhood And Help). Since the creation of the program, 142 scholarships totaling more than $113,000 have been awarded. While JONAH no longer operates a building in Oakland Beach, the organization remains vibrant and, through a variety of activities, has sustained the scholarship program. Pictured from left are Cheryl Denis, who accepted the award on behalf of her son, Kyle, a Pilgrim grad who will be attending UMass Dartmouth to study business marketing; Tyler Balutowski, a Pilgrim grad who plans to attend CCRI and then complete his study of criminology at URI; Ward 6 Councilwoman Donna Travis; Alexia Nicholas, a Toll Gate grad who plans to attend Quinnipiac University to study psychology; Ron Farrell of the JONAH committee; and Yeeun Jang, a Toll Gate grad who plans to study biomedical engineering at Boston University. Congratulations to the above students and also the huge contribution of time and energy made by Ron Farrell and Councilperson Donna Travis of JONAH. Without their nonstop commitment, Warwick students wouldn't have received 142 scholarships!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One more reason there should be a statue of Donna at the entrance to Oakland Beach.

    Happy Summer everyone.
