Academic safari

Teams that will be competing in the 2018 Rhode Island Academic Decathlon on March 18 at the Knight Campus of the Rhode Island Community College got the flavor of Africa in more than one experience Saturday when they visited Roger Williams Zoo. The theme of this year is Africa, and students are boning up on everything from history of the continent to its multiple cultures, music, art and politics. Following a tour of zoo exhibits, the students gathered in the zoo conference center to hear CCRI adjunct professor David Gracer talk about his participation in a trek across the Serengeti. Although a professor of English, Gracer is an expert in entomophagy – eating insects – and was picked to join the group for that reason. At the end of his talk Gracer asked for a show of hands of those who would try eating insects and then passed along some ants for them to sample – dead ants that is.
