Fearing that it could collapse and further damage salvageable records and items, if not injure those working to recover items from the fire, Woodbury Union Church had the remnants of the steeple lowered to the ground Saturday morning. A crew from Warwick Tree Service cut the beams supporting the structure with a chainsaw and then lowered it by crane. A group from the church cheered when the steeple was lifted from the remains of the roof, but it was a bittersweet moment as the congregation was all too well reminded of the fire and the work that lies before them. A cause of the fire remains unidentified. Meanwhile, the church is holding services in nearby St. Benedict and is awaiting information on insurance and costs to rebuild. (Warwick Beacon photos)
