Save The Bay cleanup series starts today at 4 popular city beaches

Save The Bay will kick off a summer beach cleanup series today to help keep four popular Warwick shoreline areas beautiful throughout their busiest season of the year. Oakland Beach, Conimicut Point Recreation Area, Rocky Point State Park and Salter Grove Fishing Area are favorite summer spots for beachgoers, fishermen and visitors from all over the region. Save The Bay is seeking volunteers and volunteer cleanup leaders to join in the weekly series on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.: at Rocky Point on June 8, July 6, and August 3; Salter Grove on June 15, July 13 and August 10; Conimicut Point on June 22, July 20, and August 17; and Oakland Beach on June 29, July 27 and August 24. Sign up to volunteer at:  bit.ly/WarwickSummerCleanups.

“Warwick has more shoreline than any other town in Rhode Island and so many beautiful beaches and people who care about them. We encourage anyone who swims, fishes or just enjoys these beaches to get involved and spread the word,” Save The Bay Volunteer Manager July Lewis said in a release.

In addition to cleanup volunteers, Save The Bay is looking for volunteers who can, with Save The Bay’s help and training, take on the important and rewarding aspect of serving as cleanup leaders. “Leading a cleanup really just takes a desire to make a positive difference. Cleanup leaders are the people who explain to volunteers what to do, answer volunteer questions and coordinate with us at Save The Bay,” Lewis said. “We always try to pair cleanup leaders, so they can help each other along the way.” Cleanup leader trainings will be held on June 27, 7 p.m. at the Warwick Library; July 13, 6 p.m. at Save The Bay in Providence, and August 5, 10 a.m. at Save The Bay in Providence. In addition to the beach cleanup efforts, Save The Bay will partner with the City of Warwick, local businesses, schools, and other community groups to spread the word about the growing global problem of marine debris and the health hazards it poses to humans and marine life, as well as tips on how to prevent litter in their communities.

“Our longstanding partnership with Save The Bay is one that I am extraordinarily proud of,” said Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian. “Their unwavering commitment to the preservation and protection of the bay is one that the City not only applauds, but works to reinforce. With 39 miles of coastline, it is imperative to the long-term use and sustainability of our shores to continue to support programs that continually add value to our community. Save The Bay’s efforts highlight the positive difference that can be made when everyone works together for a greater good.”

“Together, the cleanup series, community engagement, education and outreach is an effort to take our traditional beach cleanup program to the next level and help reduce littering rates overall. We invite all people who care about these precious natural resources to join us in this effort as volunteers and ambassadors,” Lewis said.
