Sen. Calkin thanked for her service

Posted

To the Editor:

In last week’s Democratic primary, people of Senate District 30 honored me with a majority of their votes. I am deeply grateful to them, and thankful for the opportunity to serve in the Rhode Island Senate.

At the same time, I have to acknowledge my opponent, Jeanine Calkin. The primary contest was hard-fought, but remained focused on the issues. The incumbent and I differed on a number of questions, but I expect we agree more than we disagree. To the extent that our views are similar, I will look to promote legislation that Ms. Calkin supported. We are Democrats. There’s room in our party for a broad spectrum of views. We can continue to discuss and debate the issues, with civility.

Running for office, as I have learned, is not easy. While the candidates usually try to stay above the fray, supporters sometimes throw out accusations and mean statements, with no basis, against good people. Clearly, it’s best to avoid even glancing at the comments section in Facebook, etc. But the candidates are seldom the monsters that their detractors make them out to be.

With respect to District 30, Jeanine Calkin deserves credit, in the first place, for seeking public office. She stepped into the arena and fought for what she believed in. She served honorably as a member of the Senate. I thank Senator Calkin for her service.

For my part, I plan to listen, carefully consider the issues, and vote in accordance with the interests of the people of Warwick and the state. I plan to ask the tough questions and arrive at the answers that benefit as many Rhode Islanders as possible.

Nice letter. I'm sure Ms Calkin's friendly political ghost will be around for a while to help out...
