Sentinels too much for Lady Titans

Warwick Co-op couldn’t keep pace with Smithfield/Coventry in the front end of the Andrew J. Gauthier Scholarship Games at Thayer Arena on Friday night. The Sentinels got four goals apiece from captains Alyssa Beaton and Samantha McCarthy in an 8-2 victory over the Lady Titans.

Beaton buried the game’s first two goals.

She ripped a shot blocker side 44 seconds in to make it 1-0, and she picked up the puck in the neutral zone at 3:09 of the first period, before bolting down the left wing and scoring a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0 out of the gate.

Twenty-one seconds later, Warwick sophomore forward Nicole Procaccini got the Lady Titans on the board when she went in on a breakaway and scored after a Sentinels’ turnover at their offensive blue line to make it 2-1.

Warwick just couldn’t find an answer for Beaton and McCarthy, though.

McCarthy would score two goals of her own before the period was up – the first from the goal line, and the second off her own rebound.

McCarthy then completed her hat trick just north of a minute into the second period when she finished off a nice feed from Beaton to make it 5-1.

Procaccini answered with the only other goal in the period on an impressive individual effort, going coast-to-coast before firing a shot into twine to trim the deficit to three, 5-2.

However, the Sentinels would score three more times in the third period on two tallies from Beaton and one from McCarthy to secure the win, 8-2.

Warwick got goals from Procaccini, Rebecca Yaseen and Elise Saccoccia on Saturday night against Cranston/East Greenwich Co-op, but it couldn’t get by the Thunderbirds either, falling by a final score of 6-3.

The Lady Titans will have two cracks at picking up their first win this weekend.

They’ll host Cumberland/Lincoln/Mount St. Charles on Friday at Thayer at 6 p.m., before traveling to Levy Arena to take on Bay View/Burrillville/Ponaganset Co-op at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
