Sister Mary Brenda Sullivan, 94, a Sister of Mercy and a retired educator, passed away March 29, 2012 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland.
Born Anne E. Sullivan in Providence, she was the daughter of the late John and Nora (Barry) Sullivan. A Sister of Mercy for more than 75 years, she entered the Mercy community on Sept. 8, 1935 and professed her final vows on Aug. 16, 1941. Sister was a graduate of the former St. Xavier Academy, class of 1935. She earned a B.S. in education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence and an M.S. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Sister's first ministry was at the former St. Mary School, Pawtucket, and from there she taught at the former Cleary School in Providence, the former St. Mary's School in Bristol, the former Tyler School in Providence and St. Mary Academy-Bay View in Riverside. Sister was a member of the school board at St. Rose of Lima School, Warwick. Sister Mary Brenda was assigned to teach at Salve Regina College (now University) in 1960; she retired from the university in 1976. The Biology Laboratory at Salve Regina bears her name, a tribute to her many years of dedicated teaching at the university.
In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Margaret Eldredge, Sally A. Sullivan, James Sullivan and Helen Motte.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated April 3 at 11 a.m. in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland. Visitation was held April 2 at the Health Centre with a Mercy Prayer Service. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery.
